Research Field

RIKEN Center for Computational Science (R-CCS), led by Center Director Satoshi Matsuoka, is an international hub for computational science that promotes “science of computing, by computing, and for computing.” R-CSS positions the technology in which RIKEN has strengths (R-CCS technology) and the software developed by RIKEN that contributes to science, technology, industry, and society (R-CCS software) as its “core competence in computational science driving science as a whole.” R-CCS aims to develop these technologies, disseminate them domestically and internationally, and produce results. In addition, R-CCS utilizes its expertise to operate the supercomputer Fugaku, developed as Japan's national project, in accordance with relevant ordinances.

The Quantum-HPC Hybrid Platform Division, with the help of external funding and other resources, is working on the establishment of a Quantum-HPC Hybrid Platform, which will be a new computational infrastructure for extending computational possibilities by advanced integration of quantum computers (QCs) and supercomputers (HPCs) under the Transformative Research Innovation Platform of RIKEN platforms (TRIP) project being promoted by RIKEN. The project includes the development of software stacks necessary for the establishment of the Quantum-HPC Hybrid Platform and the improvement of the usage environment for the quantum HPC platform.

Job description

General management of the Quantum-HPC Hybrid Platform Division and promotion of projects supported by external funding. Detailed descriptions are as follows.

  • Management of the project budget and on-going status, and promotion of PR, etc.
  • Management of computing resources for quantum computers and HPC (including institutional design, etc.).
  • Coordination with universities, research institutes, and companies for the development and utilization of the Quantum HPC Hybrid Platform (including coordination in response to requests for quantum algorithm/application development, etc.).
  • Providing guidance, advice, and coordination for research and development related to quantum HPC hybrid computing.
  • Other matters necessary for the operation of the Quantum HPC Hybrid Platform Division and the promotion of projects supported by external funding.

Also, including the duties necessary to promote collaboration and cooperation with other centers within RIKEN.

Duties will be determined on a case-by-case basis based on the experience and aptitude of the applicant (successful candidate).

Any changes in duties during the contract period or at the time of contract renewal will be within the scope of the above job description.

Qualifications

The applicant must have a PhD degree or equivalent and have sufficient management skills to assist the Director of the Quantum-HPC Hybrid Platform Division and manage the division well.
They should not only have an understanding of supercomputers (or quantum computers), but also be interested in the construction of the Quantum HPC Hybrid Platform, which will be a new computational resource, and be willing to cooperate with the developers and users of the Quantum HPC Hybrid Platform, and to understand the significance of the common infrastructure that supports the expansion of the computable domain from a long-term perspective while being enthusiastic about their work. In addition, the applicant should possess the cooperativeness and communication skills necessary to carry out the work. The field of research in which the applicant has been engaged and the content of research and development results are not considered.

Work location is to be adjusted according to the content of the R&D to be conducted, etc.

RIKEN has implemented a work-from-home system. Employees can work from home in accordance with the prescribed procedures. Employees may be transferred to other locations when necessary to perform duties, in accordance with relevant regulations.

Salary and benefits

  • 1.One-year fixed-term employment contract for a full-time management position. Renewable based on evaluation, up to seven years from the initial date of hire.
  • 2.RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on the employee's abilities, workload at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude; and the continuation of the employee's center, laboratory or project and RIKEN's management situation and budget at the time. In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 70 years.

RIKEN hires personnel through open calls for indefinite-term positions with a mandatory retirement age of 61 (applicable for fiscal year 2024) and offers a subsequent re-employment program allowing hiring until age of 65. Any scientists at RIKEN, including fixed-term Deputy Directors, are eligible to apply to open calls for indefinite-term positions.

In principle, the first two months of employment is considered a trial period.
Salary will be an annual salary based on experience, ability, and performance, and will consist of a base salary and a variable salary. The variable salary will be determined each fiscal year based on experience, ability, and performance. The monthly base salary is 611,700 JPY as of April 1, 2024. The monthly base salary and variable salary are subject to change due to amendments to RIKEN regulations.
Commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will be applied.

The approximate amount of annual salary at the time of employment:
The monthly annual salary at the time of employment will start from 611,700 JPY or higher for this position, with additions based on performance and experience. The monthly annual salary (base salary plus variable salary) at the time of employment for a person with about 20 years of experience, ability, and achievement after completion of the doctoral program will be about 810,000 JPY.

Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai).
Work hours: 9:00 to 17:20 (lunch break 12:00 to 12:50). However, the employee may change starting and finishing times at their own discretion if it does not interfere with work performance.
Days off include public holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.

Paid leave includes annual paid leave (up to 20 days per year depending on the month of employment), special paid leave (childcare, family nursing care, etc.), and work-life balance holidays (up to 7 days per year depending on the month of employment).
There are also additional leave systems such as maternity leave, childcare leave, and family nursing care leave.
No smoking on site.
These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.

    If you have any experience supervising supercomputers, quantum computers, large-scale data centers, or software development, please specify and describe in detail.
  • 3.Work history and research and development achievement list
    Explain your overall work history. If you have engaged in research and development, attach lists of papers (divided by original papers, reviews, and others), patents, invited talks, etc. Please also include quantitative measures for evaluation, such as the Google Scholar citation index, whenever possible.
    Note: When attaching the lists of papers, submit copies of up to five major papers (Please mark the major papers in the list of research achievements.) If the original papers are not in PDF format, scan the papers and save them as PDF documents for submission.
  • 4.List of competitive funds acquired, awards received, and other achievements
    Include contributions to university/institution operations, contributions to society through activities in academic societies, joint research projects, technology transfers, etc.
  • 5.Resolutions for the job position (no more than two A4 pages)
  • 6.Recommendation letters from two persons who can evaluate your work
    Note:
    • One recommendation letter should be written by the applicant's current supervisor. If this is difficult to provide, a recommendation letter written by a third party may be accepted.
    • If the applicant currently works for RIKEN, recommendation letters should be written by a person outside of RIKEN.
    • Both recommendation letters should not come from the same institution.
