Future plans
 
Rough outline of plans for completion of the XFEL facility. Endeavors now underway to finish the project as early as possible.
2009.3 Finish construction of the building housing the light source and all related equipment.
2009.4 Start installation of electron gun, acceleration tubes, undulators, etc.
2010.5 Finish construction of experiment/research building.
in FY2010 Achieve XFEL laser oscillation.
2011.10 Open facility to shared use.

2007.7 XFEL facility construction begins.
2006.11 First XFEL symposium is held.
2006.8 An instrument is developed for the first time in the world which is able to instantly measure the spectrum (color) of XFEL-emitted radiation.
2006.6 Success achieved in laser oscillation of 49nm UV rays in the test apparatus.
2006.4 RIKEN and Japan Synchrotron Radiation Research Institute (JASRI) establish joint promotion office for the XFEL project.
2006.3 Establishment of XFEL Project Head Office
First general convention of federation of National Diet members for the promotion of optical science technology projects promotes advancement of XFEL project.
2006.2 RIKEN SPring-8 Center Advisory Council (RSAC) notes that the combined XFEL and Spring-8 facilities will be unique and that Japan should take a leading role by constructing the XFEL.
2005.12 National government allocates 2.3 billion yen from the 2006 national budget for construction and research on use of the XFEL facility.
2005.11 An electron beam successfully projected through the entire length of the test apparatus and generation of synchrotron radiation confirmed.
2005.9 Working group to review the next-generation synchrotron light source project concludes in its mid-term report that “the XFEL plan should be actively carried forward and the project should be started at an early date”.
2005.5 Establishment of an XFEL user promotion group
2005.4 Manufacture of a 250MeV test apparatus begins.
Liberal Democratic Party’s MEXT working group designates the next-generation synchrotron radiation source as a “critical technology of national importance”.
2005.2 International Review Committee Meeting for XFEL held prior to project launch, and recommendations made for promotion of the project.
2005.1 XFEL project included as an important research objective for future R&D in the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) policy report on promoting science and technology of light and photons.
2004.11 Establishment of an R&D group for XFEL.
2003.12 Completion of an electron gun and the achievement of a world record for its emittance value.
2003.7 RIKEN symposium is held.
2002.10 Completion of an in-vacuum undulator with a shorter period and higher magnetic field.
2000.4 Drafting of the XFEL development concept (compact and low-cost).
