The Center for Emergent Matter Science (Center Director: Dr. Yoshinori Tokura) is a strategic research center launched on April 1st, 2013. The center aims at constructing a novel condensed matter science and contributing fundamentally toward the realization of an environmentally benign, sustainable society which is recognized as a world-wide problem

We offer a post-doc position in the area of theoretical quantum condensed matter and quantum information processing in the solid state, in the Quantum System Theory Research Team in CEMS, RIKEN (Tokyo) lead by Prof. Dr. Daniel Loss.

Postdoctoral Researcher
Postdoctoral Researcher is defined as those with a doctoral degree of 5 years or less.

Job description

The post-doc will join ongoing activities on spin and phase coherent phenomena in semiconducting and magnetic nanostructures, as well as quantum information processing in the solid state. Topics of current interest include: spin qubits, quantum dots, decoherence phenomena in semiconductors, many-body effects in low-dimensional electronic systems, nuclear magnetism, quantum transport of magnetization, topological quantum matter, topological superconductivity, topological insulators, Majorana fermions and parafermions, hybrid systems, Floquet systems, optical effects, etc. The stimulating environment of the newly established RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science (CEMS) offers many opportunities of interactions with experimental and theoretical groups with related interests. The new Postdoctoral Researcher could also benefit from collaborations with theoretical groups at the University of Basel, Switzerland.


Applicants must have a Ph.D. in theoretical Condensed Matter Physics.
They must be able to read, write, and speak fluently in English.

Salary and benefits

One-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable, based on evaluation, up until March 31, 2021 at the latest. However, the contract duration may be changed, depending on the evaluation of RIKEN and the Center for Emergent Matter Science (CEMS) by the government authorities and other circumstances. The total duration of the contract with RIKEN shall not exceed 10 years from April 1, 2013.
The salary system is annual and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will apply. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai) is required.
Days off include public holidays, New year’s holidays (Dec. 29 – Jan. 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.
These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.
