Seeking Postdoctoral Researcher or Research Scientist

Research Field

RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science (AICS) is operating one of the world's most powerful supercomputers, the K computer, and it also has a strong research division. AICS takes the lead in advancing computational science and aims to be an international center of excellence for computational science in collaboration with a wide range of research organizations. AICS integrates computer science and computational science to conduct world-leading research and development of a wide range of applied scientific computation, as well as of high performance computing technologies.
AICS has launched development of the next Japanese flagship supercomputer in April 2014.
The System Software Development Team performs cutting-edge research and development on system software for high-end, large scale supercomputers (

Job title and Job description

Available position

Postdoctoral Researcher or Research Scientist

Job description

The accepted candidate will work with the system software development team at RIKEN AICS to work on one of the following topics.

  1. To participate in the design and development of an operating system, called IHK/McKernel, targeting large scale, high-end supercomputing systems. IHK/McKernel follows a multi-kernel architecture where Linux and a light-weight kernel are run side-by-side on compute nodes, primarily to achieve the followings goals.
    • Provide scalable, consistent performance for large-scale parallel applications by eliminating OS interference
    • Support in-situ analytics, workflows, tools and the full set of POSIX/Linux APIs
    • Provide efficient memory and device management in the operating system so that resource contention and data movement are minimized
    • Provide a system software stack that can rapidly adapt to new hardware and software requirements
For more information about IHK/McKernel, visit:
  2. To participate in the design and development of a low-level communication library, called OFI/LLC, and an MPICH-based MPI library, called RMPI. OFI/LLC provides communication functions to both parallel language runtimes (e.g., MPI library) and applications (e.g., visualization) via a low-level interface. RMPI provides communication functions to applications via the MPI. Both of them target large scale, high-end supercomputing systems. The followings are the goals of OFI/LLC.
    • Support inter-job communication
    • Support utilization by existing MPI programs with minimal code modification
    • Provide the latest optimizations earlier than vendor-provided libraries
For more information about OFI/LLC, visit:

The primary goals of RMPI are as follows.

  • Support the latest MPI features, including those still not in the standard
  • Provide the latest optimizations earlier than vendor-provided library

Postdoctoral Researcher and Research Scientist positions require a Ph.D. degree or equivalent. Research Scientist position is usually available for those who have more than 5-year postdoctoral experience. Comprehensive knowledge of Linux/UNIX, proven skills in C/C++, assembly language, and/or other programming languages for system software and also expertise in operating system kernels, runtime systems, parallel computing and/or software development are required.
