Research field and overview

The Center for Advanced Intelligence Project has been launched with subsidy from Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology-Japan for “Advanced Integrated Intelligence Platform Project (AIP) -Artificial Intelligence/ Big Data/ Internet of Things/ Cybersecurity-”.
The Center conducts fundamental theoretical research and develops an innovative technology, with aiming to advance science and contribute to society or humanity. In detail, the missions of Center are 1) to promote cutting-edge Research and Development in the field of informatics with new AI technology at its core, 2) to establish next-generation fundamental technology for various applications that are useful to society, 3) to contribute to providing value to the economy and society through innovative application of the technology, 4) to contribute to creating a social environment to provide ethical and social support for a world in which AI technologies are becoming pervasive, 5) to develop human resources needed for AI technologies and their applications.

Research Scientist is basically defined as those with a doctoral degree more than 5 years.
Postdoctoral Researcher is basically defined as those with a doctoral degree of 5 years or less.
Technical Scientist:Development of technology and sophistication required for research
Technical Staff 1:Technical support with independent initiative
Technical Staff 2:Technical support based on supervisor's instruction

Job description

Carry out research and development in the following research category(ies) under the supervision of Team/Unit Leader
Some domestic and/or international travel may be required.

Research Category:

  1. Development of fundamental informatics technology for making a revolutionary impact on science and technology and for contributing to realizing practical use
  2. Creation of knowledge with integrating scientific/technological datasets for providing value to the economy and society through innovative application of the technology
  3. Identification of ethical, legal, social issues emerging from a social environment in which AI technologies are becoming pervasive, and Proposal for creating a social system that is adaptable to technological advances by incorporating humanities and social sciences

Qualifications

Research Scientists or Postdoctoral Researchers
Research Category 1 and 2: Applicants must already possess, or are scheduled to receive, a doctoral degree in information science technology or related areas by the time of appointment.
Research Category 3: Applicants must already possess, or are scheduled to receive a doctoral degree by the time of appointment.

Technical Scientist: Applicants must possess a bachelor degree or higher with the related knowledge, technics, skills, or equivalent experience. Graduate school alumni are preferable.

Technical Staff 1 and 2: Applicants must have graduated from a university, junior college, or vocational college and possess related knowledge, techniques, skills, or equivalent experience.

Salary and benefits

For Research Scientists

  1. Applicants must be fixed-term employees who are able to accept multiple-year employment contracts (maximum 3 years), extended to maximum number of fiscal years ending 7 years from appointment, depending on RIKEN performance review.
  2. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee's abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee's center, laboratory or project and RIKEN's management situation and budget at the time.
  3. The employee's period of fixed-term employment shall not exceed 10 years from the initial date of hire (or 10 yearsfrom April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date).

For Postdoctoral Researchers

  1. Applicants must be fixed-term employees who are able to accept multiple-year employment contracts (maximum 3 years), extended to maximum number of fiscal years ending 5 years from appointment, depending on RIKEN performance review.
  2. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee's abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee's center, laboratory or project and RIKEN's management situation and budget at the time.

A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum of the end of the fiscal year (March 31) in which the employee completes 7 years of employment, depending on RIKEN performance review. Performance review for promotion is scheduled in the fiscal year after the fourth year from appointment. Extension for the 6th fiscal year may be declined, depending on evaluation.
  2. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee's abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee's center, laboratory or project and RIKEN's management situation and budget at the time.
  3. The employee's period of fixed-term employment shall not exceed 10 years from the initial date of hire (or 10 years from April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date).

The salary system is annual and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will apply. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai) is required.
Days off include public holidays, New year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan. 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.
These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.
