Research field and overview

Our team studies the static and dynamic magnetic and atomic structure of strongly correlated electron systems using various neutron scattering techniques. We are working to verify the relevance of physical characteristics in controlling and enhancing the behavior of these systems. Research topics include; (1) Elucidation of the role of spin-orbit interactions in quantum states of newly discovered exotic superconductors, (2) Verification of FFLO phase and/or helical vortex phase, and (3) Study of the dynamics of skyrmions in topological magnetic materials.

Job description

We are seeking highly motivated condensed-matter scientists in the field of strongly correlated electron systems. The successful candidates will carry out original research relating to one or more of the following research topics by utilizing neutron scattering techniques.

  1. Elucidation of the role of spin-orbit interactions in quantum states of newly discovered exotic superconductors.
  2. Verification of FFLO phase and/or helical vortex phase.
  3. Study of the dynamics of skyrmions in topological magnetic materials.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a doctor degree (or are expected to have until the employment). Applicants with less than 5 years postdoctoral research are expected to apply to the position of postdoctoral researcher and those with more than 5 years postdoctoral research are expected to apply to the research scientist position. Previous experience with (i) research of emergent phenomena in strongly correlated electron systems and (ii) neutron scattering experiments is expected for research scientist but only (i) is required for postdoctoral candidates.

Salary and benefits

  1. One-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, up to the end of the fiscal year exceeding seven years*1 since the initial date of hire. (Research* Scientists)
  2. A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum of the end of the fiscal year (March 31) in which the employee completes 5 years of employment. (postdoctoral researchers)
  3. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee's abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee's center, laboratory or project and RIKEN's management situation and budget at the time.
  4. The employee's period of fixed-term employment cannot exceed 10 years from the initial date of hire (or 10 years from April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date).
  5. When the center to which the Employee is affiliated is scheduled for a final review in FY2022 and it is decided that the Employee's research will not be continued, the provision given above for projects of limited duration applies and the Employee's contract will not be renewed for the FY2023 year that would extend employment beyond the center's final fiscal year.
  6. (Research Scientists) When the Employee's research is scheduled to be reviewed in his/her 5years from the original date of hire at CEMS, and when it is concluded that there is reason* to believe it will be difficult for the research (or technology development) to be continued, the employment contract will not be renewed for the next year. (*The reason may relate to the Employee's abilities, performance and/or work attitude.)

The salary system is annual and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will apply. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai) is required.
Days off include public holidays, New year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan. 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.
These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.
