Seeking Postdoctoral Researcher, Research Scientist, or Senior Research Scientist

Research Field

The Advanced Institute for Computational Science (AICS) is operating the world's leading K computer, and also has a strong Research Division. AICS takes the lead in advancing the computational science and aims to be an international center of excellence for computational science in collaboration with a wide range of research organizations. AICS integrates the computer science and computational science to conduct most advanced research and development of a wide range of applied scientific computation, as well as of high performance computing technologies.

The Data Assimilation Research Team ("DA team") performs cutting-edge research and development on advanced data assimilation methods and their wide applications, aiming at integrating computer simulations and observational data in the wisest way. Particularly, the DA team will tackle challenging problems of developing efficient and accurate data assimilation systems for high-dimensional simulations with large amount of data. The specific areas include 1) research on parallel-efficient algorithms for data assimilation with the super-parallel K computer and Post-K computer, 2) research on data assimilation methods and applications, and 3) development of most advanced data assimilation software.

Job title and Job description

Available position

Postdoctoral Researcher, Research Scientist, or Senior Research Scientist, a few positions available

Job description

Conduct research and development on data assimilation. Some examples follow:

  1. Advanced research on data assimilation with high-resolution numerical weather prediction models, aiming at improving forecasting capability of local high-impact weather events.
  2. Theoretical research on data assimilation, including (but not limited to) an algorithmic design for efficient computations and methodological development for nonlinear, non-Gaussian applications.
  3. Research on advancing data assimilation for making sense of “Big Data.”
  4. Research on pioneering new applications of data assimilation for various high-performance-computer simulations.

The successful candidates are expected to carry out original research and development in tight collaboration with other members of our team, other teams in AICS, other centers in RIKEN, and other collaborative partners in Japan and overseas. In addition, Senior Research Scientist helps Team Leader to manage the team.

A Ph.D. degree or equivalent with strong background in data assimilation and related research fields. Research Scientist position is usually available for those who have more than 5-year postdoctoral experience. Senior Research Scientist position is available for those who have outstanding record of original research capability. Proven skill in UNIX and FORTRAN90 and/or other programming languages for scientific computation is required. DA team is interested in skilled and motivated applicants who have experience and knowledge in advanced data assimilation with high-dimensional systems. Experience with high-performance parallel computers is a great plus. Excellent communication skill in English (or Japanese) is required.

Work location

Data Assimilation Research Team is located in the following address.
RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science,
7-1-26, Minatojima-minami-machi, Chuo-ku, Kobe, 650-0047, Japan

Salary and benefits

  1. A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum of the end of the fiscal year (March 31) in which the employee completes 7 years of employment.
  2. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee's abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee’s center, laboratory or project and RIKEN's management situation and budget at the time.
  3. The employee's period of fixed-term employment cannot exceed 10 years from the initial date of hire (or 10 years from April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date).

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Benefits include commuting and housing allowances and social insurance. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai).
Days off include Japanese national holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day. These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.

Also, eligible for an exemption from repayment for category 1 scholarship loans provided by the Japan Student Services Organization before fiscal year 2003. You will also be eligible for applying for external research funding including the Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (Kakenhi) of Japan.

RIKEN is promoting a Gender Equity Program by taking various measures to create a workplace where both men and women are able to give full rein to their talents and abilities.
