Research Field

The Advanced Institute for Computational Science (AICS) is the organization which has two major divisions, one for research and development of computational science and the other for operation of the K supercomputer. AICS cooperates with many research organizations of a wide-range of research fields, forms an international center for research and development, and plays the leading role of computational science in Japan. In AICS, computer science and computational science closely cooperate, and conducts research and development of common foundational nature for a wide range of fields in computational science, and also conducts research and development for high performance computing technologies.

The mission of the Large-scale Parallel Numerical Computing Technology Research Team is to research and develop a highly advanced numerical library and its framework enabling High-Performance Computing for end-users and developers. To achieve the goal, we conduct research in the following three fields:

  1. Research and development of modern numerical libraries to utilize full computational potential of the K-computer and an upcoming flagship system.
  2. Research on the fault tolerant framework of mathematical software.
  3. Research on high accuracy calculations or multi-precision arithmetic.

Job Description

Postdoctoral Fellow:Conduct research and development on elemental technologies and design/implementation of systems in one or more of the above three items.
Technical Staff:Support design/implementation of software developed in team projects.


The position requires a Ph.D. degree or equivalent. If it has been 5 years or less since your acquisition of the Ph.D. degree, you will be employed as a Postdoctoral Fellow. We welcome skilled and motivated people who have experience and knowledge in one or more of the following areas: large-scale numerical simulation codes, modern or advanced computer hardware, compiler, numerical linear algebra, data analysis, etc. Also, we expect you to interact computational scientists in AICS or other institutes. The research environment is international and hence communication in English (or Japanese) is required.

Salary and benefits

  1. Postdoctoral Fellow:A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum of the end of the fiscal year (March 31) in which the employee completes 5 years of employment.
  2. Technical Staff:A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum of the end of the fiscal year (March 31) in which the employee completes 7 years of employment. We plan to evaluate in the sixth year. Depending on the evaluation result, there is a possibility that it will be extended beyond seven years.
  3. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee's abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee's center, laboratory or project and RIKEN's management situation and budget at the time.
  4. The employee's period of fixed-term employment cannot exceed 10 years from the initial date of hire (or 10 years from April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date).

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will be applied. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai). Days off include public holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.
These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.

Selection process
