The Laser Acceleration Development Team conducts R&D for the electron beam acceleration system using high power lasers and leads innovation for the X-ray sources.

Job Title: Team Leader (one position)

Responsibilities: Conducting R&D for the electron beam acceleration system with the following


  1. to advance the electron beam acceleration system to the GeV level with excellent beam quality and stability
  2. in particular, to develop a modular system that is applicable for multi-stage acceleration
  3. to establish a plan for enabling stable and reliable operation of the high-power lasers
  4. to develop advanced brilliant X-ray sources that exploit the interactions between the high-power lasers and the relativistic electron beam


The applicant must have the following qualifications:

  1. Ph.D. degree or equivalent research experience
  2. Demonstrated experience in designing and developing laser acceleration systems
  3. Experience planning and managing mid- to long-term development projects for systems
  4. Broad knowledge and experience with high-power laser operations and the ability to apply techniques to achieve stable operation of the laser system
  5. Experience collaborating closely with both domestic and foreign laboratories in related research fields

Salary and benefits

  1. A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum of the end of the fiscal year (March 31) in which the employee completes 7 years of employment.
  2. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee's abilities, workload at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee's center, laboratory or project and RIKEN's management situation and budget at that time.
  3. The employee's period of fixed-term employment cannot exceed 10 years from the initial date of hire (or 10 years from April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date).

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will be applied. The position requires membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai). Days off include public holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.
These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.
