The Computational Engineering Applications Unit is striving to solve various issues arising not only within RIKEN's research environment but also by society at large, through computer simulation, data processing and database development.

In principle, successful candidates with less than 5 years of experience after receiving a doctoral degree will be hired as Postdoctoral Researcher and those with 5 years of experience or more will be hired as Research Scientist.

Job description

Successful applicants must play a leading role in development of data driven neural circuit modelling of cerebral cortex, which is a secondary project to support the exploratory research project 4 for the post K computer, “Elucidation of How Neural Networks Realize Thinking and Its Application to Artificial Intelligence” led by Senior Scientist Jun Igarashi affiliated with the same laboratory. In this project, the applicants will get involved in research and development of realistic neural circuit modeling of the corticocerebral high order motor area, somatosensory area and thalamus which will use large scale parallel computers including the post K computer.

Applicants who have expertise and experience in research of realistic neural circuit modelling at that nerve cell level. Applicants must have a doctoral degree (or must be expected to receive a doctoral degree by the date of hire).

Salary and benefits

One-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, up to the end of the exploratory research project for the post K computer development (March 31, 2020) since the initial date of hire.

However, RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on (a) the employee's abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and (b) the continuation of the employee's center, laboratory or project and RIKEN's management situation and budget.

The employee's period of fixed-term employment cannot exceed 10 years from the initial date of hire (or 10 years from April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date).

The salary system is annual and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will apply. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai) is required.
Days off include public holidays, New year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan. 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.
These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.
