The Enzyme Research Team aims to design and develop novel functional and structural biopolymers such as poly(amino acid) and structural proteins (spider silk). Using functional biopolymers, we also develop peptide-mediated transformation and modification of plants and photosynthetic bacteria. One Research Scientist or Postdoctoral Researcher

Job description

We are looking for one Research Scientist and Postdoctoral Researcher, to start immediately. We are seeking candidate who can investigate on the structure-function relationship of natural and artificial biopolymers. Biological and chemical syntheses of biopolymers are also included in our research target.
Postdoctoral Researcher is defined as those with a doctoral degree of 5 years or less.
Research Scientist/Contract Researcher is defined as those with a doctoral degree more than 5 years.


Generally, successful candidate is expected to speak and write English fluently, to have knowledge and expertise in one or more of the following areas: polymer science, polymer chemistry, organic chemistry, synthesis of polymer (polypeptide), peptide design, material science, genetic engineering, protein science, molecular biology, and plant science.

Salary and benefits

  1. A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum of the end of the fiscal year (March 31) in which the employee completes 7 years (Postdoctoral Researcher: 5 years) of employment.
  2. RIKEN will decide whether to enter into a new contract on the basis of the employee’s abilities, work load, performance, work attitude, continuation of the center, laboratory or project in which the employee is involved at the time of termination of the original contract, and on the basis of RIKEN’s situation and budget conditions at the time. In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 65 years.
  3. For contracts entered into on or after April 1, 2013, RIKEN will not enter into a new fixed-term employment contract that extends the employee’s total years of employment at RIKEN to more than 10 years .
  4. When the center to which the Employee is affiliated is scheduled for a final review in FY 2022 to decide its operations from FY 2022 and beyond, and it is decided that the Employee's research will not be continued, the provision given above for projects of limited duration applies and the Employee's contract will not be renewed for FY 2023 year that would extend employment beyond the center's final fiscal year.

The salary system is annual and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will apply. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai) is required.
Days off include public holidays, New year’s holidays (Dec. 29 – Jan. 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.
These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.
