Research field and overview

RIKEN invites applications for the position of Team Leader (indefinite-term researcher in management position) to serve in a leadership position in the following research area. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing research projects from a medium- to long-term perspective.

Research area:
We are seeking a next-generation leader in chemical biology who is able to take on the challenge of new research projects by promoting integrative research based on multiple disciplines. Specifically, the successful candidate is expected to open up new research fields that will further understanding of the interactions between organisms, through discovery or the development of novel bioactive compounds and identification of their target molecules.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the area described above and work as a team leader in the RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science.

Applicants should have appropriate research experience supported by a distinguished research record and the ability to play a pivotal role in the research area. RIKEN welcomes applications from overseas candidates.

Rights and responsibilities

  • Required to work as a team leader to conduct research in the area described above. Also required to participate in RIKEN management through a variety of activities.
  • Eligible to apply for competitive funding from within and outside RIKEN.
  • Eligible to request allocation of indefinite-term researchers.
  • Eligible to hire fixed-term researchers and host Special Postdoctoral Researchers and Junior Research Associates.
  • Eligible to apply for the purchase of commodities, research funds, and laboratory space.
  • Has the responsibility to oversee the work of all laboratory members; manage the laboratory budget; and manage the maintenance and use of all laboratory equipment and instruments.


Type of employment

The post is an indefinite-term employment position, subject to RIKEN's mandatory retirement age of 60. There is a re-employment program to hire individuals as fixed-term employees from age 60 to age 65 in accordance with the Act on Stabilization of Employment of Elderly Persons. Depending on evaluation results, it is possible to continue research in a management position until age 65 as a fixed-term employee.

Remuneration and other provisions

Monthly salary will be paid based on an annual salary. Social health insurance, commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai). Days off are weekends, public holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec 29 -Jan 3) and RIKEN Foundation Day. These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.


RIKEN may require changes of responsibilities, job category, and work place based on RIKEN regulations due to management decisions, budgetary situation, and organizational restructuring.

  • Research achievements (list of publications, list of patents, etc.)
  • One set of copies of your main papers (maximum number: 5)
  • Lists of external funds received, awards received, and other achievements including contributions to University/Institution operations, contribution to society through activities in scientific societies, joint research projects, technology transfers, and the like
  • Outlines of your research projects to date (2 pages, A4 size)
  • Your future research plans and ideas on how you expect to manage your team and mentor young researchers if you are accepted for the position(4 pages in A4 size in total)
  • Letters of recommendation from two persons who can evaluate your work.
    *Letters of recommendation may be submitted separately from the other application documents.
    *Submission by email is also acceptable. If letter of recommendation is submitted by email, subject line must be “Recommendation for [applicant's name] for chemical biology TL”. Selection process

After application documents are screened, only the successful candidates will be asked to have an interview.
There will be final interviews with RIKEN executive directors as part of the hiring process. These interviews are planned for February 2, 2018.

Start of Employment

RIKEN expects that the successful applicant will be able to take up this position at the earliest opportunity on or after April 1, 2018.
