Research field and overview

RIKEN invites applications for the position of laboratory head (indefinite-term researcher) who will direct a research project in the following research area with a medium- to long-term vision.

Research area: Experimental hadron physics
The successful candidate is expected to conduct a pioneering research project in hadron physics and to take the initiative in international collaborations at one of the major accelerator facilities in the world.

Chief Scientist in the RIKEN Pioneering Research Cluster (provisional title) which will be launched in April 2018. Another title will be given if the successful candidate is assigned to one of the research centers in RIKEN.


Applicants should have a distinguished research record and have an ability to play a pivotal role in the relevant research area. RIKEN welcomes applications from overseas candidates.

Work location

Wako, Saitama, Japan. Work location may be at another location depending on the type of research undertaken.

Rights and responsibilities

  • Required to participate in RIKEN management activities in addition to conducting research in the area described above as a laboratory head.
  • Eligible to apply for competitive funding within and outside of RIKEN.
  • Eligible to request allocation of indefinite-term researchers.
  • Eligible to hire fixed-term researchers as well as to host Special Postdoctoral Researchers and Junior Research Associates.
  • Eligible for purchasing of commodities and requesting laboratory space.
  • Responsible for overseeing laboratory members, managing the laboratory budget and handling the maintenance and use of all laboratory equipment and instruments.


Type of employment

The post is an indefinite-term employment position, subject to RIKEN's mandatory retirement age of 60. There is a re-employment program to hire individuals as fixed-term employees from age 60 to age 65 in accordance with the Act on Stabilization of Employment of Elderly Persons. Depending on evaluation results, it is possible to continue research in a management position until age 65 as a fixed-term employee.

Remuneration and other provisions

Monthly salary will be paid based on an annual salary. Social health insurance, commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai). Days off are weekends, public holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec 29 -Jan 3) and RIKEN Foundation Day. These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.


RIKEN may require changes of responsibilities, job category, and work place based on RIKEN regulations due to management decisions, budgetary situation, and organizational restructuring.

  3. List of external funds, awards, and service to academia and society.
  4. Outline of research activities to date (3 pages on A4 or letter sized paper)
  5. Plan for future research, laboratory management and human resources development (3 pages on A4 or letter sized paper)
  6. Two recommendation letters addressed to the RIKEN President. Stamp or signature by referee is necessary.

Selection process

After application documents are screened, only the successful candidates will be asked to have an interview.
