Research field

The RIKEN Center for Life Science Technologies has two core purposes. One is to develop key technologies for breakthroughs in the medical and pharmaceutical applications of life science. The other is to conduct groundbreaking research and development for the next-generation life sciences.

The Division of Genomic Technologies plans to develop methods for screening of key regulatory factors, with selection based on transcriptional networks, epigenomes and ncRNAs, in order to establish a pipeline to accomplish complete cell conversion methods, including differentiation of stem cells safely and terminally. We also develop methods for diagnosis of human biomarkers for human health and diseases.

The Transcriptome Technology Team develops technologies to comprehensively detect non-coding RNAs and comprehensively screen their functions. Using those technologies, we explore regulatory interactions of ncRNAs within cells, with particular emphasis on the interaction of non-coding RNA with chromatin, retrotransposition and ncRNAs having a role in the regulation of protein synthesis. These technologies will be important for the development of cell conversion methods. Additional emphasis will be on standardization of transcriptome technologies like CAGE, to make a universal and finely quantitative transcriptome technology. Such standardization is essential for the identification of novel biomarkers and drug target candidates.

Job description

Successful candidates will have strong experience in the analysis of next generation sequencing datasets, including RNA-seq, cap-analysis gene expression (CAGE), ChIP-seq, shortRNA-seq or single cell RNA-seq datasets and other next generation technologies, including integration of different data types, with the mission of extracting data of biological significance.
This is a core funded position and, as such, the individual will contribute on projects of importance to the division.

Tasks common to all positions are as follows:

  • Contribute to plan experiments
  • Push core projects to successful completion
  • Document code and analyses allowing reproduction of analyses
  • Generate strong publications on core and related projects
  • When appropriate, give oral and posters presentations at conferences

The difference in positions is as follows:
* Senior Scientist: Assists the Team Leader, supervises and instructs other researchers on the team, and carries out research and other work in accordance with team research themes.
*Research Scientist: Carries out research and other work in accordance with team research themes. Will occasionally be asked to provide instruction to junior staff, etc.
* Postdoctoral Researcher: Carries out research and other work in accordance with team research themes under the mentorship and training of supervisors.
* Research Associate: Carries out research and other work in accordance with team research themes under the direction of supervisors.

Qualifications

Common to all positions

  1. Demonstrated a strong publication track, depending on the career stage, in any of the following (or related) areas.
    • Large-scale transcriptome analysis
    • Integration of large-scale sequence datasets (RNA-seq, CAGE, ChIP-seq, DHS, etc.)
    • Systems biology and transcriptional regulatory network prediction
    • Cross-species sequences or network comparison
    • Matched genome-transcriptome studies, including eQTL identification
    • Machine learning and pattern recognition
    • Promoter architecture and motif finding
    • De-convolution of cell mixtures from tissue expression profiles
  2. Experience with working in a multiuser Unix/Linux environment.
  3. Experience with next-generation sequencing data (especially large next-generation sequencing datasets) is preferred.
  4. Experience with long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) analysis and knowledge of their biology is preferred.
  5. Experience with data integration and transcriptional regulatory networks is preferred.
  6. Has an enthusiastic, proactive and constructive attitude
  7. Possesses excellent communication skills and engages in research in a coordinated manner (needed to complete the assigned tasks with members of various nationalities).
  8. Comfortable with English professionally for scientific discussion and publication (Japanese language skills are not required).

Senior Scientist

PhD holder in Biological Sciences, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or a related field, with more than seven years postdoctoral experience. Be able to supervise and instruct team members.

Research Scientist

PhD holder in Biological Sciences, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or a related field, with more than three years postdoctoral experience.

Postdoctoral Researcher

PhD holder in Biological Sciences, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or a related field, with less than three years postdoctoral experience.

Research Associate

Master's degree holder in Biological Sciences, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or a related field, or equivalent abilities. Should also have a strong desire to earn a PhD and motivation to advance to a higher position.

Terms of contract

Senior Scientist, Research Scientist:

  1. A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum of the end of the fiscal year (March 31) in which the employee completes seven years of employment.
  2. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee's abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee's center, laboratory or project and RIKEN's management situation and budget at the time.
  3. The employee's period of fixed-term employment cannot exceed 10 years from the initial date of hire (or 10 years from April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date).

Postdoctoral Researcher:

  1. A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum of three year from the date of hire. In addition to an annual evaluation, an additional evaluation will be conducted in the third year. Additional employment for higher position will be determined through some procedures.
  2. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee's abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee's center, laboratory or project and RIKEN’s management situation and budget at the time.
  3. The employee's period of fixed-term employment cannot exceed 10 years from the initial date of hire (or 10 years from April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date).

Research Associate:

  1. A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum of the end of the fiscal year (March 31) in which the employee completes seven years of employment.
  2. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee's abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee's center, laboratory or project and RIKEN’s management situation and budget at the time.

  4. In evaluation, the employee will be asked whether or not there is a strong desire to earn a PhD degree and motivation to advance to a higher position.

Salary

Salary is determined annually on the basis of the employee's experience, abilities and performance.
Commuting and housing allowances will be provided in accordance with RIKEN regulations and social insurance applies (health insurance, pension insurance, worker's accident compensation insurance, unemployment insurance, etc.).
Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai).

Holidays

Saturdays and Sundays, Japanese national holidays, New Year holidays (Dec.29-Jan.3), and RIKEN Foundation Day (4th Monday in October).
