RIKEN invites applications for the position of laboratory head (indefinite-term researcher in management position) to serve in a leadership position in the following research area. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing research projects from a medium- to long-term perspective.

Research area: Cell Architecture and Dynamics
The successful candidate is expected to build a laboratory that aims to elucidate the architecture and dynamics of the cell with multidisciplinary perspectives and cutting-edge technologies. Ambitious scientists who will pioneer a new era of cell biology are encouraged to apply. Target areas of research include, but not limited to, in vitro reconstitution of higher-order cellular architecture, and/or analyses of cellular dynamics through a physicochemical point of view (e.g., membrane-less organelle assembly mediated by phase separation or functional domain assembly on cellular membranes).

Chief Scientist in the RIKEN Pioneering Research Cluster (provisional title) which will be launched in April 2018. Another title will be given if the successful candidate is assigned to one of the research centers in RIKEN.


Applicants should have appropriate research experience supported by a distinguished research record and the ability to play a pivotal role in the research area. RIKEN welcomes applications from overseas candidates.

Work location

Wako, Saitama, Japan. Work location may be at another location depending on the type of research undertaken.

Rights and responsibilities

  • Required to participate in RIKEN management activities in addition to conducting research in the area described above as a laboratory head.
  • Eligible to apply for competitive funding from within and outside RIKEN.
  • Eligible to request allocation of indefinite-term researchers.
  • Eligible to hire fixed-term researchers as well as to host Special Postdoctoral Researchers and Junior Research Associates.
  • Eligible to apply for the purchase of commodities, research funds, and laboratory space.
  • Responsible for overseeing laboratory members, managing the laboratory budget and handling the maintenance and use of all laboratory equipment and instruments.


Type of employment

The post is an indefinite-term employment position, subject to RIKEN's mandatory retirement age of 60. There is a re-employment program to hire individuals as fixed-term employees from age 60 to age 65 in accordance with the Act on Stabilization of Employment of Elderly Persons. Depending on evaluation results, it is possible to continue research in a management position until age 65 as a fixed-term employee.

Remuneration and other provisions

Monthly salary will be paid based on an annual salary. Social health insurance, commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai). Days off are weekends, public holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec 29 -Jan 3) and RIKEN Foundation Day. These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.


RIKEN may require changes of responsibilities, job category, and work place based on RIKEN regulations due to management decisions, budgetary situation, and organizational restructuring.

  • Letters of recommendation from two persons who can evaluate your work.
    • Letters of recommendation may be submitted separately from the other application documents.
    • Submission by email is also acceptable. If letter of recommendation is submitted by email, subject line must be “Cell Architecture and Dynamics PI [applicant's name] (Recommendation Letter)”. Selection process

After application documents are screened, only the successful candidates will be asked to have an interview.
There will be final interviews with RIKEN executive directors as part of the hiring process.
