Interdisciplinary Theoretical and Mathematical Sciences (iTHEMS) program” (program director: T. Hatsuda) promotes interdisciplinary collaborations and creation of new interdisciplinary fields through the interactions among researchers in mathematics, theoretical sciences, and computational sciences. Also, iTHEMS aims at nurturing young scientists who cross the boundaries between different disciplines.

Job description

iTHEMS invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position to work on a research project in high energy astrophysics fields. The project, led by Dr. Yoshiyuki Inoue, is partly funded by the Leading Initiative for Excellent Young Researchers (LEADER) program “Unveiling the nature of supermassive black holes by linking theory and observations”.
The successful applicant will work on X-ray and/or gamma-ray data analysis related to high energy astrophysical phenomena in a broad sense.
The successful applicant is also expected to participate in the interdisciplinary interactions among different fields such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, life science, astronomy, computational science and information science under the concept of iTHEMS. Applicants must have Ph.D. or expect to receive Ph.D. before the date of the appointment.

Salary and benefits

One-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable, and based on evaluation, within a period of three years from date of hire.
RIKEN will decide whether to enter into a new contract on the basis of the employee’s abilities, work load, performance, work attitude, continuation of the center, laboratory or project in which the employee is involved at the time of termination of the original contract, and on the basis of RIKEN’s situation and budget conditions at the time. Contract is valid only before 65 years old.
For contracts entered into on or after April 1, 2013, RIKEN will not enter into a new fixed-term employment contract that extends the employee’s total years of employment at RIKEN to more than 10 years.

The salary system is annual and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience (as an example, an annual salary (including discretionary work allowance) will be 4,800,000 JPY/year immediately after obtaining a PhD. It can become higher depending on qualifications and experience). Commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will apply. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai) is required.
Days off include public holidays, New year’s holidays (Dec. 29 – Jan. 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.

Research fund (700,000 JPY/year) will be provided. Also, eligible for JSPS grant application.

These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.
