Research Field

The center is focused on research for understanding genomic functions and disease through genome analysis; elucidating the processes of immune-related homeostatic regulation and breakdown in humans; and investigating disease systems through the data collection, measurement and modelling of environmental responses. The center also carries out basic cancer immunology research that integrates all these fields with the aim of applying them to personalized cancer treatments and the like. These efforts will help to promote the establishment of a research system to bridge the path to societal implementation of breakthrough treatments.

The center director’s office carries out international collaboration, academic-industry collaborations, internal collaborations, management and utilization of intellectual property, acquisition and management of research funds, outreach work, holding of academic conferences, support for improving internationalization of the center’s work environment, and the necessary administrative and management work of the center.

Job Title and Job Description

Coordinator (full-time, two positions)

Note: Coordinator responsibilities will be decided based on factors such as the candidate’s preferences, abilities and aptitudes.

Responsibilities

  1. Plans and carries out the center’s public relations activities. Communicate/coordinates with the public relations offices for the Yokohama Campus and RIKEN headquarters and works in collaboration with the Planning Office.
  2. Plans, proposes and carries out overall organization of the center’s annual Advisory Council meeting, working in collaboration/cooperation with the Planning Office.
  3. Prepares presentation materials for the RIKEN Advisory Council.
  4. Plans and carries out explanatory meetings for the center’s collaborating graduate school programs and coordinates with graduate school staff.
  5. Develop and manage new programs for the development of young scientists.
  6. Plans and promotes collaborations with domestic and international universities and research institutes for the center’s external collaborations strategy.
  7. Acts as the contact person for center researchers for matters concerning joint research, intellectual properties and research ethics, contacting and coordinating with the Planning Office and other related sections at RIKEN.
  8. Provides guidance and advice as needed to center researchers applying for external funds.
  9. Provides support to PIs in charge of various seminars held by the center.
  10. Plans the center’s symposiums and retreats and works in collaboration with the Planning Office to manage these events.
  11. Creates documents and materials for budget requests, independent administrative institution evaluations and RIKEN’s Mid-to-Long-term Plan, etc. based on the instructions of the center director.

Qualifications

  • PhD degree holder (life sciences field preferred), or equivalent, with sufficient knowledge of the work described under “Job Description.”
  • Five years or more experience in the areas described under “Job Description.”
  • Experience working with computers (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, etc.)
  • Ability to communicate in English (conversations and emails) and create scientific documents in English.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a coordinated manner with the center staff and other collaborators.
  • Highly motivated.

Salary and Benefits

Terms of contract:

  1. A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum of the end of the fiscal year (March 31) in which the employee completes 7 years of employment.
  2. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee’s abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee’s center, laboratory or project and RIKEN’s management situation and budget at the time. In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 65 years.
  3. The employee’s period of fixed-term employment cannot exceed 10 years from the initial date of hire (or 10 years from April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date).
  4. When the center to which the Employee is affiliated is scheduled for a final review in FY 2022 to decide its operations from FY 2023 and beyond, and it is decided that the Employee's research will not be continued, the provision given above for projects of limited duration applies and the Employee’s contract will not be renewed for FY 2023 year that would extend employment beyond the center's final fiscal year.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will be applied. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai). Days off include public holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.
These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.
