Research field and overview

Our team is working on the real-space observation of electron structures or topological electron-spin textures (skyrmion) and their dynamics in strong-correlation systems by means of atomic-resolution electron microscopy. We will use various microscopy techniques, such as the in-situ imaging technique, differential phase contrast microscopy, electron energy-loss spectroscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy, etc., to explore the electron structures and their dynamical phase transitions or phase separations. We also use these powerful tools to quantitatively characterize the nanometric magnetic and electric fields in topological matters to exploit emergent phenomena.

Job description

We are seeking researcher in the field of strongly correlated electron systems. The successful candidates will carry out original research relating to one or more of the following research fields.

  • transmission electron microscopy
  • microfabrication technique
  • magneto-transport measurements
  • data mining


Applicants must have a doctor degree (or are expected to have by the employment). Applicants with less than 5 years postdoctoral research are expected to apply to the position of postdoctoral researcher and those with more than 5 years postdoctoral research are expected to apply to the research scientist position. Previous experience with (i) transmission electron microscopy and (ii) microfabrication technique is expected for research scientist but only (i) is required for postdoctoral candidates.

Salary and benefits

  1. (Postdoctoral Researcher) A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum 5 years from the initial date of hire.
  2. (Research Scientist) A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum 10 years from the initial date of hire.
  3. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee's abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee's center, laboratory or project and RIKEN's management situation and budget at the time. In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 65 years.
  4. The employee's period of fixed-term employment cannot exceed 10 years from the initial date of hire (or 10 years from April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date).
  5. When the center to which the Employee is affiliated is scheduled for a final review in FY2024 and it is decided that the Employee's research will not be continued, the provision given above for projects of limited duration applies and the Employee's contract will not be renewed for the FY2025 year that would extend employment beyond the center's final fiscal year.
  6. (Research Scientist): When the Employee's research is scheduled to be reviewed in his/her 5years from the original date of hire at CEMS, and when it is concluded that there is reason* to believe it will be difficult for the research (or technology development) to be continued, the employment contract will not be renewed for the next year. (*The reason may relate to the Employee's abilities, performance and/or work attitude.)

The salary system is annual and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will apply. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai) is required.
Days off include public holidays, New year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan. 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.
These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.
