Seeking Research Scientist, Technical Scientist or Technical Staff(IMS113-1801)

Laboratory

Preventive medicine and applied genomics unit
RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences(tentative)
(Unit Leader: Hideya kawaji)

Research field and overview

We focus on computational aspects in clinical genomics, which includes extensive exploration of biomarkers indicating clinical status, genomic analysis combined with clinical records, and secure computing environment supporting these analysis. We are going to develop technologies in these fields and contribute to projects in RIKEN Preventive Medicine & Diagnosis Innovation Program as well as other projects by applying our technologies.

Research Scientist, Technical Scientist or Technical Staff, a few persons.

Job description

Project Name: “Primate RNA database for development of oligonucleotide therapeutics”
Period: The project will end on March 31, 2020
*This work is supported by Platform Program for Promotion of Genome Medicine, The Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED)

Recent technical development in life science expanded the ability to measure molecules in organisms or cells. In particular, 2nd and 3rd generation DNA sequencers enabled us to monitor nucleotides quantitatively across the genome. In parallel, the field of drug discovery made major progresses, and one of them is nucleic acids-based medicine that targets RNA molecules transcribed from the genome. Before application to human, animal-based assessments are conducted as pre-clinical studies in common, where non-human primates are frequently considered. However it is not straightforward in case of the nucleic acids-based medicine, due to limited amount of their genome annotations in comparison to human. To help the drug developments, we started to build a resource or database of primate RNA (mRNA, pre-mRNA, and long noncoding RNA).

The candidate will lead (Research Scientist) or work on (Technical Scientist or Technical Staff) the research on the primate RNA database. In previous studies, we have established atlas databases for human regulatory elements (promoters and enhancers) and long noncoding RNAs, by using CAGE (Cap Analysis Of Gene Expression) and RNA-seq (Nature 507, 455-461, 2014; Nature 507, 462-470, 2014; Nature 543, 199–204, 2017). The candidate will expand it to cover several species of non-human primates, with expressed form of RNA molecules in individual organs or cells. The candidate will work on additional research projects conducted in our unit, including clinical genomics and computational genomics.

Qualifications

  • The candidate should understand basics of genomics or clinical researches
  • The candidate should have experience or knowledge in computational analysis
  • Capability in communication to establish good relationships with other members in the unit and outside.
  • Language skill to discuss and collect information in Japanese
