Research Field

RIKEN BioResource Center (BRC) has been engaging in collection, preservation, and distribution of bioresources indispensable for R&D, i.e. experimental animals, experimental plants, human and animal cells, microbes and their genetic materials. In addition, it will pursue researches that make active use of its bioresources.

In 2018, RIKEN BRC plans to launch a new team. The major task of this team is to develop and evaluate disease mouse models necessary to promote personalized or precision medicine, focusing on the human intractable diseases designated by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare and age associated human diseases including cerebrovascular, mental/neurological and lifestyle-related diseases that put extremely heavy burden on patients, their families and the society. In addition, the team aims to conduct comparative studies of the mouse models with human diseases regarding onset mechanisms and pharmacokinetics in order to promote the use of the disease mouse models. RIKEN BRC seeks a team leader.

The team leader should comprehend social and research needs as well as research trends and lead R&D of disease models selecting diseases which require whole animal studies. The team will develop mouse models which faithfully recapitulate genetic/genomic mutations/variations and pathology of the designated intractable diseases or the diseases of the aged. The most advanced genome modification technologies will be used to produce mice with knock-in point, multiple or conditional mutations. The developed mice will be analyzed and evaluated through the standard, disease-specific and ageing-specific phenotyping platforms built by the International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium. The team is expected to collaborate with external clinical experts as well as Experimental Animal Division, Technology and Development Team for Mouse Phenotype Analysis and iPS Cell Advanced Characterization and Development Team (new) of RIKEN BRC for studies of disease mechanisms, pharmacokinetics and establishing POC (Proof of Concept) in preclinical studies. The disease models together with associated information useful for diagnosis, therapies and drug discovery will be distributed through Experimental Animal Division to biomedical research community.

Task content: managing and leading a team in pursuit of the goals of the above research and development program. Attending the center operation meeting and cooperating in the operation of the center.
* Research teams generally consist of two or three researchers and one or two technical staff members as necessary. The lab receives budgetary funds to cover all personnel costs. The laboratory is fully equipped and located at RIKEN BioResource Center, Tsukuba, Japan.


The candidate should have excellent research and development experiences and achievements in the relevant field as well as profound understanding the significance of the BRC's resource project. In addition, the candidate is expected to be capable and lead the above research and development while closely collaborating with our resource divisions and clinical experts of the disease research community. The candidate must have Ph.D., MD or MD/Ph.D. degree in the field of biomedical sciences. The candidate is expected to have deep knowledge and experiences in relevant fields.

Salary and benefits

  1. A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum of the end of the fiscal year (March 31) in which the employee completes 7 years of employment.
  2. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee's abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee's center, laboratory or project and RIKEN's management situation and budget at the time. In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 65 years.
  3. The employee's period of fixed-term employment cannot exceed 10 years from the initial date of hire (or 10 years from April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date).

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will be applied. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai). Days off include public holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.
These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.
