Next Generation High Performance Architecture Research Team

Research Field

R-CCS is the organization which has two major functions, one for research and development of computational science and the other for operation of the K supercomputer. R-CCS cooperates with many research organizations of a wide-range of research fields, forms an international center for research and development, and plays the leading role of computational science in Japan. In R-CCS, computer science and computational science closely cooperate, and conducts research and development of common foundational nature for a wide range of fields in computational science, and also conducts research and development for high performance computing technologies.
The post-K computer development plan under the FLAGSHIP 2020 Project, initiated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2014, has set the target of developing (1) the next generation flagship supercomputer of Japan (the successor of the K computer) along with (2) a wide range of applications that will address top priority social and scientific issues.
The team leader position is now open for the Next Generation High Performance Architecture Research Team. For the purposes of enhancing utilization of the Post-K supercomputer as well as advancing future parallel computing technologies, this team is intended to tackle the following research agendas:

  1. Ultra high-bandwidth architecture based on novel technologies such as next generation non-volatile memory, stacked 3-D memory, as well as advanced optical interconnect
  2. Re-evaluation of non von Neumann architectures such as dataflow and systolic arrays based on latest advances in device technologies
  3. Acceleration of machine learning and neuromorphic computing as well as advancement of scientific simulations utilizing those technologies
  4. Hybrid computing architectures that combine the benefits of quantum computing and classical computing
  5. Next generation ultra-fast optical interconnect and optical switches
  6. Detailed co-design evaluation of next generation architectures above as well as the algorithms on Post-K

Job description

  1. Creating, managing and leading a research team in pursuit of the goals of the above research project based on top-level science and co-design as well as providing guidance to researchers, motivating and coordinating the activities of researchers, and promoting research results.
  2. Developing a framework for making the developed software and hardware open and sustainable for next generation research.

Qualifications

The candidate must be prepared to actively carry out research and development toward creating a common framework to support computational science and technology in a wide sense, and to promote interdisciplinary research between computer and computational science. Abilities to supervise Ph.D students and to manage a research team are required. Particularly those who have the following experiences:

  1. High performance computer design, next generation computing architecture, and optical interconnects.
  2. Massively parallel algorithms and programming language design.
  3. Evaluation of high performance architectures and algorithms.

Salary and benefits

  1. Five-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum 10 years since the initial date of hire.
  2. RIKEN will decide whether to enter into a new contract on the basis of the employee’s abilities, work load, performance, work attitude, continuation of the center, laboratory or project in which the employee is involved at the time of termination of the original contract, and on the basis of RIKEN’s situation and budget conditions at the time. In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 65 years.
  3. For contracts entered into on or after April 1, 2013, RIKEN will not enter into a new fixed-term employment contract that extends the employee’s total years of employment at RIKEN to more than 10 years.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will be applied. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai). Days off include public holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.
These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.

Selection process

Candidates who pass the screening will undergo an interview consisting of a presentation including self-introduction, personal research, and research plan if given an opportunity to pursue research at R-CCS. All applicants will be informed of the results of the screening and interviews, but we cannot give information to individual candidates on the screening or specific reasons for rejection.
