Research Field

The Plant Symbiosis Research Team aims to understand how legume plants establish mutual symbiosis with soil bacteria, rhizobia, with focus on root nodule development. We have investigated molecular mechanisms on how infection of bacteria results in cell division of differentiated cells, eventually leading to formation of the de novo organ, the root nodule. Evolution of nodulation based on comparative genomics is also of interest.

Project name: “Initiation of Plant Stem Cells by Reprogramming”
Period: The project will end on March 31, 2022
This work is supported by “Principles of pluripotent stem cells underlying plant vitality” (Grand-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas (JSPS)).

The selected candidate will be engaged in constructing gene regulatory networks in root nodule development, focusing on several transcription factors required for nodulation. He/she will be expected to carry out RNA-seq and ChIP-seq, in addition to ATAC-seq. Tight collaborations with other groups in the associated projects, especially with Dr. Minoda of CLST/RIKEN on single-cell analysis, are planned.


PhD holder in fields of developmental biology and/or cell biology. Background in plant science is preferred but not mandatory.
Comfortable with English as a professional language for scientific discussion and publication (Japanese language skills are not required).
Candidates with less than five years of postdoctoral experience will be considered for the position of Postdoctoral Researcher.

Salary and benefits

  1. A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum extent of March 31, 2022, the end date of the project.
  2. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee’s abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee’s center, laboratory or project and RIKEN’s management situation and budget at the time. In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 65 years.
  3. The employee’s period of fixed-term employment cannot exceed 10 years from the initial date of hire (or 10 years from April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date).

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will be applied. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai). Days off include public holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.
These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.
