“Interdisciplinary Theoretical and Mathematical Sciences (iTHEMS) program” (program director: T. Hatsuda) promotes interdisciplinary collaborations and creation of new interdisciplinary fields through the interactions among researchers in mathematics, theoretical sciences, and computational sciences. Also, iTHEMS aims at nurturing young scientists who cross the boundaries between different disciplines.

Postdoctoral Researcher or Research Scientist, one person.
Postdoctoral Researcher is defined as those with a doctoral degree of 5 years or less. Research Scientist is defined as those with a doctoral degree more than 5 years.

Job description

iTHEMS is seeking a research scientist in life sciences. Successful applicant is expected not only to pursue his/her own top-level researches in life sciences but also to lead interdisciplinary collaborations among different fields such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, life sciences, engineering, computational sciences, information sciences, and social sciences, under the concept of iTHEMS. This time, we encourage junior applicants who have research experiences in mathematical biology, bioinformatics, systems biology, evolutionary biology, genome biology etc. and can collaborate with iTHEMS Senior Research Scientists, Dr. Jeffrey Fawcett and Dr. Takashi Okada. Qualifications

Applicants must have Ph.D. or expect to receive Ph.D. before the date of the appointment.

Salary and benefits

One-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable, and based on evaluation, within a period of three years from date of hire.
RIKEN will decide whether to enter into a new contract on the basis of the employee’s abilities, work load, performance, work attitude, continuation of the center, laboratory or project in which the employee is involved at the time of termination of the original contract, and on the basis of RIKEN’s situation and budget conditions at the time.In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 65 years.
For contracts entered into on or after April 1, 2013, RIKEN will not enter into a new fixed-term employment contract that extends the employee’s total years of employment at RIKEN to more than 10 years.

The salary system is annual and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will apply. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai) is required.
Days off include public holidays, New year’s holidays (Dec. 29 – Jan. 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.
These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.
