Seeking Research Scientists or Postdoctoral Researchers

Research Field

The RIKEN Center for Computational Science (R-CCS) is operating the world's leading K computer, and also has a strong Research Division. R-CCS takes the lead in advancing the computational science and aims to be an international center of excellence for computational science in collaboration with a wide range of research organizations. R-CCS integrates the computer science and computational science to conduct most advanced research and development of a wide range of applied scientific computation, as well as of high performance computing technologies.

The objective of the unified simulation research team is to develop simulation methods which can treat complex flow problems coupled with such as structure deformation, heat-transfer, electromagnetic field or chemical reaction by efficiently utilizing massively parallel environment such as K-computer and post-K. For that purpose, we have to research new algorithm for solving multiple partial differential equations with various time and length scales simultaneously. We also have to develop a tool or algorithm for the improvement of massively parallel efficiency to support programming and usage environment of the supercomputer. The simulation technology developed in the team is directly validated and evaluated in RIKEN Industry-Academia consortiums for its implementation in the industry.

Job title and Job description

Available positions

Research Scientist or Postdoctoral Researcher

Description

We are seeking for a few person who can engage in one or more of following three topics:

  1. Research and development of flow simulation solver on passively parallel environment.
  2. Research and development of algorithm for complex phenomena of multiple governing equations for flow, structure, heat, electromagnetic field, or chemical reaction.
  3. Research and development of algorithm or tool for efficiently utilizing massively parallel environment (such as dynamic load balancing method).

Qualifications

The position requires a Ph.D. (including those who will take a degree before arriving at the post. If it has been 5 years or less since your acquisition of Ph.D. degree, you will be employed as a Postdoctoral Researcher ), or equivalent/higher abilities to accomplish the offered topics: those who have considerable experience in actual simulation and analysis of engineering complex phenomena are highly evaluated. The candidate also should have good experience of not only computer programming using C, C++, or Fortran but also parallel tuning using MPI or OpenMP. It is preferable to have experience of the offered topics. Communication in English (or Japanese) is required.

Work location

RIKEN Center for Computational Science,
7-1-26, Minatojima-minamimachi, Chuo-ku, Kobe, 650-0047, JAPAN

Salary and benefits

  1. (Research Scientist) One-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, up to seven years since the initial date of hire.
  2. (Postdoctoral Researcher) One-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, up to five years since the initial date of hire.
  3. RIKEN will decide whether to enter into a new contract on the basis of the employee's abilities, work load, performance, work attitude, continuation of the center, laboratory or project in which the employee is involved at the time of termination of the original contract, and on the basis of RIKEN's situation and budget conditions at the time. In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 65 years.
  4. The employee's period of fixed-term employment cannot exceed 10 years from the initial date of hire (or 10 years from April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date).

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will be applied. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai). Days off include public holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.
These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.
RIKEN is promoting a Gender Equity Program by taking various measures to create a workplace where both men and women are able to give full rein to their talents and abilities. When applicants are judged to be equally qualified on the basis of fair and impartial criteria, women applicants will be given preference.

Also, eligible for an exemption from repayment for category 1 scholarship loans provided by the Japan Student Services Organization before fiscal year 2003, and eligible applying for the MEXT Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (Kakenhi).
