Research field

The mission of our laboratory is to understand the origins and functions of non-coding transcription in human genome, with a focus on long non-coding RNAs and enhancer RNAs implicated in diseases. We have been at the forefront of annotating these non-coding RNAs using large-scale in-house transcriptomic datasets (e.g. FANTOM). We also integrate our in-house datasets with public epigenomic and genetic datasets to gain insights into the roles of non-coding RNAs in human diseases. Our team is primarily composed of bioinformatic analysts specialized in transcriptomics and genetics, but we are working closely with experimental biologists of other teams on technology development (e.g. single-cell transcriptomics) as well as other collaborative projects.

The successful candidate will 1) establish and characterize cellular model(s) of neurological disorders, 2) perform genetic perturbations on the non-coding RNAs in such models and 3) evaluate the disease-relevance of these non-coding RNAs. Establishment and characterization of such models involve manipulation of induced pluripotent stem cells and application of single-cell transcriptomics. Genetic perturbations in such models involve the application of CRISPR interference and antisense oligonucleotide technologies. Evaluation of these genetic perturbations involves cellular phenotypic assays and transcriptomic profiling. The ultimate goal is to identify disease-relevant functional non-coding RNAs with therapeutic potentials. The candidate will be expected to tightly collaborate with other experimental researchers in the division for setting up the systems of single-cell transcriptomics and CRISPR interference.

The difference in positions is as follows:

  • Research Scientist: Carries out research and other work in accordance with laboratory research themes.
  • Postdoctoral Researcher: Carries out research and other work in accordance with laboratory research themes under the mentorship and training of supervisors.
  • Research Associate: Carries out research and other work in accordance with laboratory research themes under the direction of supervisors.
  • Technical Scientist: Develops and enhances the needed technologies for laboratory research themes under the direction of supervisors.
  • Technical Staff: Provides technical support for laboratory research themes.

Qualifications

Common to all positions

  1. Should have an experience and knowledge in molecular or cell biology.
  2. Should be familiar with genomics technologies, in particular those relevant to applications to next generation sequencing (e.g. RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, CAGE, etc.).
  3. Should have deep interests in medical and biological problems, preferably in neurological disorders and non-coding RNA biology.
  4. Previous experience with mammalian cell culture, targeted genome editing, single-cell technologies or next-generation sequencing library construction is desired.
  5. Strong knowledge in genomics or non-coding RNA biology is desired.
  6. Additional skills in bioinformatics and analyses of single-cell data sets are meritorious, but not required.
  7. Should be highly motivated with competence in completing tasks independently.
  8. Should have excellent communication skills and be able to engage in research in a coordinated manner in order to complete the assigned tasks with the members of mixed nationalities.
  9. Comfortable with English as a professional language for scientific discussion and publication (Japanese language skills are NOT required).

Research Scientist, Postdoctoral Researcher

PhD holder in fields indicated under [Job description]. Candidates with less than three years postdoctoral experience will be considered for the position of Postdoctoral Researcher.

Research Associate

Master's degree holder in fields indicated under [Job description] or equivalent abilities. Should also have a strong desire to earn a PhD and motivation to advance to a higher position.

Technical Scientist

Holder of BA degree or above with substantial expertise and skills relevant to the fields indicated under [Job description]. Or equivalent abilities and more than five years experience in relevant fields.

Technical Staff

Graduate of a professional training school, junior college, university or graduate school with expertise and skills relevant to fields indicated under [Job description]. Or equivalent abilities and more than two years experience in relevant fields.

Salary and benefits

Terms of contract

  1. A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum of February 28, 2021, the end date of the project.
  2. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee’s abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee’s center, laboratory or project and RIKEN’s management situation and budget at the time. In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 65 years.
  3. The employee’s period of fixed-term employment cannot exceed 10 years from the initial date of hire (or 10 years from April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date).

Salary

Salary is determined annually on the basis of the employee’s experience, abilities and performance. Commuting and housing allowances will be provided in accordance with RIKEN regulations and social insurance applies (health insurance, pension insurance, worker’s accident compensation insurance, unemployment insurance, etc.).
Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai).

Holidays

Saturdays and Sundays, Japanese national holidays, New Year holidays (Dec.29-Jan.3), and RIKEN Foundation Day (4th Monday in October).
