Research Field

In the Laboratory for Next-Generation Proteomics, we are interested in understanding aging-associated metabolic disorder using state-of-the-art mass spectrometry methods. We apply next-generation mass spectrometry methods to conduct highly precise and reproducible protein quantification for both in vivo and in vitro systems. We are dedicated to decipher the molecular mechanism linking proteomic fingerprint to metabolism and energy homeostasis. We offer state-of-the-art techniques and interdisciplinary academic environment.

Job description

Project Name: “A next-generation mass spectrometric/computational strategy for aging biomarker discovery”
*This work is supported by Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B) (JSPS).

We seek for a motivated candidate who is interested in deciphering the molecular mechanism of how immune cells regulate energy homeostasis alongside aging. The successful candidate will apply quantitative mass spectrometry methods to discover the molecular basis of aging-associated metabolic disorders, such as obesity, and the influence of immune cells on the pathogenic development to these defects.

The difference in positions is as follows:
*Postdoctoral Researcher: Carries out research and other work in accordance with laboratory research themes under the mentorship and training of supervisors.
*Research Associate: Carries out research and other work in accordance with laboratory research themes under the direction of supervisors.


Common to all positions

  1. M.D./Ph.D. (already obtained/defensed or highly motivated to be) and high degree of motivation in academic research
  2. General knowledge in high-throughput data analysis (NOT necessarily in proteomics) or willingness to learn
  3. Strong interest in understanding metabolism and energy homeostasis
  4. Knowledge in metabolism and/or immunology is advantageous
  5. Ability to work both independently and in a coordinated manner
  6. Good communication and writing skills
  7. Comfortable with English as a professional language for scientific discussion and publication (Japanese is NOT required)

Postdoctoral Researcher

PhD holder in fields indicated under [Job description].

Research Associate

Master’s degree holder in fields indicated under [Job description] or equivalent abilities. Should also have a strong desire to earn a PhD and motivation to advance to a higher position.

Salary and benefits

Terms of contract

  1. A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum of March 31, 2021, the end date of the project.
  2. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee’s abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee’s center, laboratory or project and RIKEN’s management situation and budget at the time. In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 65 years.
  3. The employee’s period of fixed-term employment cannot exceed 10 years from the initial date of hire (or 10 years from April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date).


Salary is determined annually on the basis of the employee’s experience, abilities and performance. Commuting and housing allowances will be provided in accordance with RIKEN regulations and social insurance applies (health insurance, pension insurance, worker’s accident compensation insurance, unemployment insurance, etc.). Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai).


Saturdays and Sundays, Japanese national holidays, New Year holidays (Dec.29-Jan.3), and RIKEN Foundation Day (4th Monday in October).
