RIKEN and Universiti Sains Malaysia Sign Memorandum of Agreement

On April 6, a signing ceremony was held at RIKEN for a new Memorandum of Agreement between RIKEN and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Since 1993, the two institutions have been carrying out exchanges of research and personnel in a wide range of fields. A number of USM graduate students have been hosted by RIKEN's programs for young researchers, and research partnerships have been launched in the areas of biomass, chemical biology, and allergy and immunology. In September of last year, the USM-RIKEN Joint Laboratory for Bioprobe Discovery was established with the aim to make use of the rich natural resources of Southeast Asia. In the future, the two institutions are planning to strengthen their relationship further and expand the number of fields covered under the research and personnel exchanges.

University Sains Malaysia was established in 1969 as the University of Penang, and was given its current name in 1971. It is a comprehensive national university, with campuses in Penang, Seri Ampangan, and Kubang Kerian, housing 17,833 undergraduate students, 10,173 graduate students, and 1,522 faculty members (including 134 foreign faculty) at 26 schools (as of 2010). In 2008, USM was selected by the Ministry of Higher Education to be part of the Accelerated Programme for Excellence (APEX), and is aiming to become a world-class university.
