On March 12, 2013, RIKEN Executive Director Kenji Oeda and Amazonas State University (UEA) Rector José Aldemir De Oliveira signed a General Collaborative Agreement and an Agreement for International Joint Graduate School Program.

UEA was established in 2001 to serve as the core institution for development of the Amazon region. The university, with 10,000 students (including 2,000 graduate students) and a faculty of 1,100, serves as the core institution for research and education in the state of Amazonas (1.57 million km2) with campuses in Manaus and other locations in the Amazon.

The new agreements will broaden cooperation between the two institutions in a wide range of research fields and deepen the relationship between the two institutions through exchanges of personnel.
