On September 10, 2013, a ceremony was held at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM) for the signing of an MOU with RIKEN and the opening of the RIKEN-SIOM Joint Laboratory. Under the terms of the MOU, RIKEN and SIOM will collaborate in the joint laboratory on laser science research and the development of related technologies. The ceremony was attended by guests from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology and included congratulatory speeches by guest speakers, an unveiling ceremony for the joint laboratory sign, and a tour of the new laboratory facilities.

RIKEN and the Chinese Academy of Sciences have been steadily increasing their collaborations ever since the two institutions first signed an agreement for research cooperation back in 1982, but this will be RIKEN's first joint laboratory with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. RIKEN Chief Scientist Katsumi Midorikawa and SIOM Director Professor Li Ruxin have been working closely together on optics and fine mechanics research for a number of years, and the new joint research laboratory is expected to accelerate their research on laser science and related technologies.

About SIOM

The Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics was established in 1964 as a part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) to be China's first and largest institute specializing in laser research. SIOM has since become one of China's key comprehensive research institutions focused on exploring significant frontiers in basic and applied modern optics, developing large-scale laser engineering technologies and exploiting laser and optoelectronic hi-tech applications.
