Two RIKEN researchers awarded Medal with Purple Ribbon

RIKEN Science Advisor Maki Kawai and Brain Science Institute Deputy Director Atsushi Miyawaki have been selected to receive the Medal with Purple Ribbon, a Japanese government decoration awarded to people who have made notable academic or artistic achievements. Dr. Kawai received the award for her work on chemical reactions at interfaces, and Dr. Miyawaki for his pioneering discoveries in the area of bio-imaging technology. Dr. Maki served as an executive director from 2010 to 2015, and during her tenure worked to reform the research system and reorganize the research centers. The award ceremony was held on November 14.
