Scientific Frontier Series 19 Looking at RNA to Solve the Mysteries of Life

DNA and RNA are responsible for the transmission of genetic information, but many mysteries remain regarding how exactly they function. To help clear up these mysteries, RIKEN launched the international FANTOM consortium in 2000. It has gone through five stages, including the compilation of a database of full-length cDNA of the mouse and the discovery of many non-coding RNAs (ncRNA). This video presents an overall view of how the FANTOM project has elucidated the role of RNA, the development of tools such as the CAGE method for supporting RNA research, and the aims of the next stage, FANTOM6, in studying ncRNA. It includes an interview with Kyoto University Professor Shinya Yamanaka, who used the results of FANTOM for the work that earned him the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
