RIKEN Center for Advanced Photonics
Extreme Photonics Research Group
Group Director: Katsumi Midorikawa (D.Eng.)
Discovery of novel light sources expands science horizon and creates new scientific research fields. New light sources or optical technology enabling to observe what we could not see has long been yearned for a wide variety of research fields form environment science, biology, to atomic/molecular physics. In order to fulfill such our desire, our group further pursues the potential of the novel optical technology being developed at RIKEN, such as intense soft X-ray attosecond pulse sources, near-field optical microscopes and live cell imaging. Using the advantages of RIKEN's research complex covering physics, chemistry, engineering, biology and medical science, applications of these light sources are also being pursued to explore new scientific fields and to develop the industrial infrastructure. This program is also operated through close collaboration with the Institute of Molecular Science and a network of several universities in the Tokyo area, contributing to the promotion of optical science and the education of young researchers.
