RIKEN Next-generation Supercomputer R&D Center |
| Calling for Research Organizations Taking Part in a New Project: "Collaborative Study for the Image Establishment of the Next Generation Super-Computer," | |
|
Independent Administrative Corporation RIKEN (President, Dr. Ryoji Noyori) is calling for research organizations taking part in a new project: the research and development of the next generation super-computer. This request is bound to the national project, "development and application of the advanced high performance and general-use super-computer," by the initiative of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) costing the total budget of 110 billion yen starting from the beginning of the 2006 fiscal year, with which the world highest calculation speed computer is scheduled to be developed. RIKEN are looking for participant researchers from the different research organizations who can work together to propose, assess, and/or analyze the system architecture of the generalized 10-petaflop computer (10 to the power of 16 operations per second). This national project is scheduled to establish the concrete technological basis of the super computer for preserving the world-top leading position in the field of the computer science and the simulation technology. In order to achieve the goal, MEXT is now planning to put special emphasis on the research promotion of the following three main subjects: (1) the system development and arrangement to achieve petaflop calculation, the world fastest in speed, (2) the software development and its popularization to make use of the characteristics of the super computer at a maximum level, (3) the establishment of the domestic base for the computing research and education using the world highest level super computer. Through the settled "Super Computer Arrangement and Promotion Headquarter," MEXT will support the project throughout. RIKEN will play substantially a central role as the developer of the next-generation super computer and hopes to construct the research collaboration network between the industrial world and the universities, already setting up "RIKEN Next-generation Super-computer R&D Center (Director, Ryoji Noyori)" on January 1st, 2006. Subscription to the research collaboration call for this project will be closed at 12 o'clock on Friday, April 21st. |
