Research Areas

Due to the changes in a life-style, including urvan life or Western style foods, a prevalence of obesity is progressively increasing, and obesity has become a major issue in public health, medicine and the economy, because of subsequent increase of life-threatening diseases such as diabetes mellitus, stroke and coronary heart disease. Diabetic nephropathy is a leading cause of renal death, and more than ten thousands of patients are introduced to chronic renal replacement therapy due to diabetic nephropathy every year in Japan. The pathogenesis of these diseases have been thought to be multi-factorial, and genetic susceptibility is considered as an important factor for the development and the progression of obesity, diabetes and diabetic nephropathy. We are attempting to identify the gene(s) responsible for susceptibility to these diseases with a large-scale genome-wide case-control study using single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Our goal is to know the molecular mechanism of responsible gene(s) and to contribute to the advances in the prevention and the treatment of obesity, diabetes mellitus and diabetic nephropathy

Research Subject

  1. The identification of the gene conferring susceptibility to diabetic nephropathy
  2. The identification of the gene conferring susceptibility to type 2 diabetes
  3. The identification of the gene conferring susceptibility to obesity
