RIKEN's Junior Research Associate Program

An essential element for advances in creative and basic research is collaboration between young scientists—with their fresh ideas and youthful vitality—and veteran scientists—with their years of experience.
The Junior Research Associate program was launched in 1996 to encourage this kind of collaboration by providing part-time positions at RIKEN for young researchers enrolled in university PhD programs. The JRA program serves the dual purpose of fostering the development of these young scientists while also energizing RIKEN with their innovative thinking.
This is a program for young scientists enrolled in a Japanese university doctorate course to work at RIKEN on a part-time basis under the supervision of a RIKEN scientist.

1. Research fields
Physics, chemistry, biology, medical science, engineering, and other fields in which RIKEN is prepared to provide instruction and supervision.

2. Qualifications
Applicants must be enrolled (or scheduled to enroll) in a doctorate course at a Japanese graduate school at the time of employment. The graduate school must have a collaborative agreement with RIKEN or must be willing to give permission for the applicant to undertake research instruction at RIKEN.
Those whose time at the university has exceeded the standard term of study for a PhD are ineligible, and the applicant must not be participating in a similar program at another institution.

3. Contract duration & number of working days
The JRA contract is for one year. If, however, the applicant acquires a PhD or quits the university, the contract will terminate at such time regardless of whether a full year has passed.
The contract may be renewed for up to a maximum of three consecutive years. Employment is on a part-time basis for 12 days each month.

4. Remuneration (as of FY2008)
Salary: JPY 164,000 (tax included) per month
Commuting allowance: at cost up to a maximum of JPY 45,000 per month

5. Application & screening schedule
Applications accepted: From October to the middle of November
Screening of application documents: Early December
Interviews: Early January
Contract: Late March
Program start: April 1

Please refer to FY2009 JRA Program for FY2009 schedule.
