Strategy for "baton zone" research with industry
October 20, 2011
RIKEN Research Cluster for Innovation (RCI)

RIKEN uses the term "baton zone," referring to the moment when the baton is passed from one runner to the next in a relay race, to describe the framework through which organizations with different missions collaborate for the transfer of knowledge and technologies. RIKEN is working proactively within this framework to create new knowledge through interdisciplinary exchange.

In line with the basic policies for RIKEN's intellectual property announced on April 1, 2011, RCI has set a strategy for baton zone research with industry. The goal is to strengthen collaborations and optimize the contributions of all those involved in the process of exchange and cooperation.

Baton zone policies for collaborations with hospitals and other public institutions are outlined separately.

To contribute to economic and social development, the RCI will:

  1. Carry out "baton-zone" research in collaboration with industry to solve the critical issues that confront society in a way that optimizes RIKEN's overall strength in science and technology.
  2. Work to accurately gauge the scientific needs of society and industry through business-development activities, and strengthen its ability to propose joint research projects that will fulfill these needs, and in this process reinforce its organizational and comprehensive partnerships with industry.
  3. Create frameworks for joint research in which baton-zone research proposed by both RIKEN and industry can be carried out in a way that takes full advantage of the strengths of both sides.
  4. Carry out baton-zone research not only with Japanese firms headquartered in Japan, but also with foreign companies that are recognized as contributing to the development of Japan.
  5. Encourage research organizations within RIKEN to engage in baton-zone research with industry. In addition, provide needed support for baton-zone research by promoting research projects that cross departmental boundaries within RIKEN.
