REVIEWER 1 During the review conducted on November 11, 2005, we were asked to assess the quality of the research program being conducted by Dr. S. Ishii at the RIKEN DRI. We discussed the research objectives and results from his laboratory, his staff resources and their career development and future plans for the lab. My assessment is that Dr. Ishii and his staff are conducting cutting edge research at the forefront of molecular genetics, and this is verified by the quality and quantity of peer-reviewed publications from his laboratory over the past 7 years. Dr. Ishii has also made a compelling case for focusing and continuing these studies, and has done so with strong support from the institution and from his staff, who were generally considered to be outstanding. Dr. Ishii is a gem, and would be a welcome addition to any research faculty at any institution in the world. REVIEWER 2 This group led by Dr. Shunsuke Ishii has been producing series of high quality research for these five years in the field of molecular genetics. The field is more specifically related to the molecular mechanism of transcriptional regulation in eukaryotes, which is one of the central theme in modern biology and medicine. Developing Dr. Ishii's long-standing subjects, Myb and Ski, this group established an internationally renowned fame and position especially by the last several years of work. This reviewer does not want to elaborate the work in detail here, because it is concisely written in the Chief Scientist's report and also apparent in their publications in a number of high grade journals. However, in view of the importance of the subjects, original approach found everywhere and the striking novel results obtained, this group should be evaluated as "Excellent" or "AA" in any criteria. REVIEWER 3 Dr. Ishii has contributed greatly to our understanding of the molecular mechanism of cell proliferation and cancer. His recent accomplishments cover a wide range of research topics including cell biology, development, and cancer biology, and all his works contribute greatly to advancement of each field. His publications are very strong and of high impact. Dr. Ishii's presentation was very lucid and illuminating, which also greatly impressed me. I am confident that Dr. Ishii will continue to make significant contributions to the future of the Institute and to the field of cell proliferation and cancer, and I think that his research should be continuously well supported by RIKEN. REVIEWER 4 During this site visit, Dr. Ishii presented his research activity, accomplishments, as well as his future research plans. My evaluation of his activity is summarized as follows. Firstly, I am deeply impressed with his innovative research and outstanding accomplishments in the field of transcriptional regulation. Secondly, I am also impressed by the fact that Dr. Ishii has nicely integrated genetic experiments employing mouse and Drosophila systems with state of the art biochemical and molecular biological approaches. This makes his research quite competitive and indeed Dr. Ishii has explored nicely various facets of interactions between the myc, myb, sno, and ski oncogene products with transcriptional coactivators and corepressors. Thirdly, Dr. Ishii plans to continue his research at the forefront of this field. Based on these points, I would like to recommend that RIKEN DRI should support continuously Dr. Ishii, including possible expansion of the space, facility, and personnel in general. |
