Subsidy for infant/child medical expenses

In Japan, health Insurance covers 70% of children's medical expenses. In addition many of the local governments provide a subsidy for infant/child medical expenses that are not covered by the health insurance. To get this subsidy you will need to apply.

Eligibility

  • Infant Medical Subsidy:
    Preschool children are eligible until the last day of March before entering elementary school.
  • Child Medical Subsidy:
    At many local governments, children of elementary school age to junior high school age, from April 1 of the year in which they start elementary school until the end of March of their last year in junior high school are eligible for this subsidy. Please note that the eligible age of this subsidy depends on the local government where you live.

Where to apply: Designated city hall where you will live

  • Within 15 days from the day of your residence card address registration

Required:

  • Application form
  • Health Insurance Card
  • Bank account information in the name of the insured parent
