Seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher (R-CCS1905)

Laboratory

Large-Scale Parallel Numerical Computing Technology Research Team
RIKEN Center for Computational Science
(Team Leader: Toshiyuki Imamura)

Research field

RIKEN Center for Computational Science (R-CCS), led by Center Director Satoshi Matsuoka, is an international research center in high performance computing and computational science in Japan. Our objectives are to investigate “the Science of (high performance) computing, by computing, and for computing”, to research and develop our technologies (R-CCS technology) and software (R-CCS software), which we consider our core competence, in order to produce world-leading scientific and engineering results for use in Japan as well as globally.

Also, R-CCS started operating Japan’s national flagship supercomputer, the K computer, as a shared national facility to support a wide range of research activities in 2011. Following K’s success, development work on its successor, Supercomputer Fugaku, was launched in April 2014.

The Large-scale Numerical Parallel Computing Research Team conducts research and development of a highly advanced numerical library to maximize the hardware potential of the flagship-class supercomputer systems such as “K” and “Fugaku”, particularly, focusing on performance and accuracy.

Job title and job descriptions

Job title

One Postdoctoral Researcher

Job description

Conduct research regarding the exploration of lower-or-higher-precision computing (utilization of multiple-precision formats such as half/single/double/quadruple precision floating point numbers) and development of the advanced mixed-precision computing schemes to reduce required memory capacity, computing time, and the consequent energy saving.
In this research job, proceed with R&D mainly on mixed-precision arithmetic and numerical verification, of which users select an appropriate numerical precision in various processes for solving numerical problems. The goal to be set is to establish a novel development framework to enable a “Green” application that minimizes computation time and power consumption by fusing mixed-precision arithmetics and numerical verification technology. Outreach and human resource development activities are also considered as important tasks along with conducting research. Specifically, collaborate with researchers outside the team to develop the technology into a software library, and be involved in creating educational materials for the library and be in charge of workshops.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or expect to receive a Ph.D. before the date of appointment. In general, those who earned a doctorate within the past 5 years will be appointed as Postdoctoral Researchers.
The team is interested in skilled applicants who have experience and knowledge in applied mathematics such as numerical linear algebra, numerical analysis, and numerical validation/verification. Applicants with an essential computer science background, programming skills by C/C++, and experiences on the parallel programming languages (MPI, OpenMP, or others) are also considered with a great plus. The applicant highly motivated with the research areas is considered. Besides, excellent communication skill in English (or Japanese) is required.
