Seeking a Research Scientist or a Postdoctoral Researcher (IMS104-2001)

Laboratory

Laboratory for Applied Computational Genomics
RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences
(Team Leader: Michiel De Hoon)

Research Field

Cells in multicellular organisms contain largely the same genomic information, but can have vastly different functions, morphologies, and behaviors depending on cell type. This feat is accomplished by regulating the expression of each gene in a cell type specific manner. The 3D conformation of chromatin in the cell nucleus is of central importance in this regulatory system, allowing distal regulatory genomic elements such as promoters and enhancers to come into close spatial proximity and thus to exert their regulatory role. The Laboratory for Applied Computational Genomics analyzes genome-wide sequencing data to understand gene regulation in health and disease. Additionally, by taking advantage of the opportunities for collaboration and the experimental facilities available at the RIKEN Yokohama campus, we use cross-disciplinary approaches to create data sets that can help to understand the biophysical basis underlying gene regulation.

Job title and Job description

Position available

One opening for either a Research Scientist or a Postdoctoral Researcher.

Job description

The candidate will engage in genomics projects to generate and analyze data sets to understand gene regulation in the context of the 3D organization of chromatin in the nucleus. The successful candidate will generate or analyze Hi-C chromatin interaction data, but may also engage in developing novel technologies that make use of electron microscopy to visualize chromatin and RNA in the nucleus. As experimental work will be performed in collaboration with other laboratories at RIKEN Yokohama, strong collaborative skills and a willingness to work in a cross-disciplinary setting are essential.

The difference in positions is as follows:

  • *Research Scientist: Carries out research and other work in accordance with lab’s research themes.
  • *Postdoctoral Researcher: Carries out research and other work in accordance with lab’s research themes under the mentorship and training of supervisors.

Qualification

Common to all positions

The selected candidate must fulfill the following criteria:

  • 1.Should have a deep understanding of the genome, transcriptome, and regulatory genomic elements, and associated analysis techniques.
  • 2.Extensive experience in experimental technologies in molecular biology, biophysics, and/or genomics is essential, with a broad understanding of the biochemical basis behind experiments.
  • 3.Experience in bioinformatics analysis of genomics data is considered a plus.
  • 4.Must be ambitious while being a strong team player with a proactive and constructive attitude.
  • 5.Must have excellent communication skills and be able to engage in research in a coordinated manner in order to complete the assigned tasks with the colleagues in a multicultural and multinational environment.
  • 6.Comfortable with English as a professional language for scientific discussion and publication (Japanese language skills are not required).
  • 7.PhD holder in molecular biology, biophysics, or related fields. Candidates with less than three years postdoctoral experience will be considered for the position of Postdoctoral Researcher.
