Research Field

Our laboratory is interested in how we can draw biologically useful information from DNA, RNA and genetic studies and how we can apply the information to clinical settings in order to understand the basics of diseases and traits, to improve management of diseases and to develop novel treatment. Various diseases and traits are our targets, especially autoimmune diseases, hematology diseases and malignancies. We integrate multi-layered information of genetics, intermediate phenotypes and clinical information together and analyze by cutting-edge statistical genetics, epidemiological methods and machine learning-based approach.

Job description

To conduct genetic and translational studies using data of whole-genome sequences, DNA microarrays, RNA sequences and clinical information.

The difference in positions is as follows:

  • Senior Research Scientist: Assists the Team Leader, instructs other researchers on the laboratory, and carries out research and other work in accordance with laboratory research themes.
  • Research Scientist: Carries out research and other work in accordance with laboratory research themes.
  • Postdoctoral Researcher: Carries out research and other work in accordance with laboratory research themes under the mentorship and training of supervisors.
  • Research Associate: Carries out research and other work in accordance with laboratory research themes under the direction of supervisors.

Qualification

Common to all positions

  • 1.computer programming for genetic studies
  • 2.experience of analyzing data of DNA microarray and DNA/RNA sequences produced by next-generation sequencers
  • 3.(favorably) experience of machine-learning approach for omics data including DNA sequences
  • 4.(favorably) knowledge and experience of analyses for structural variation
  • 5.(favorably) experience of handling a large scale data based on multidisciplinary knowledge and techniques
  • 6.knowledge and motive of genetic association and translational studies

Senior Research Scientist

PhD holder in fields indicated under [Job description], with more than five years of work experience in a specialized field. Be able to provide guidance to laboratory members.

Research Scientist, Postdoctoral Researcher

PhD holder in fields indicated under [Job description]. Candidates with less than three years postdoctoral experience will be considered for the position of Postdoctoral Researcher.

Research Associate

Master's degree holder in fields indicated under [Job description] or equivalent abilities. Should also have a strong desire to earn a PhD and motivation to advance to a higher position.

Salary and benefits

Senior Research Scientist, Research Scientist, Research Associate

  • 1.A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum of the end of the fiscal year (March 31) in which the employee completes 7 years of employment.
  • 2.RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee’s abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee’s center, laboratory or project and RIKEN’s management situation and budget at the time. In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 65 years.
  • 3.The employee’s period of fixed-term employment cannot exceed 10 years from the initial date of hire (or 10 years from April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date).

Postdoctoral Researcher

  • 1.A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum of the end of the fiscal year (March 31) in which the employee completes 3 years of employment.
  • 2.RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee’s abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee’s center, laboratory or project and RIKEN’s management situation and budget at the time. In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 65 years.
  • 3.The employee’s period of fixed-term employment cannot exceed 10 years from the initial date of hire (or 10 years from April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date).

In principle, the first two months of employment is considered a trial period.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will be applied. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai).

These positions fall under the specialized duties discretionary work system; one working day will be calculated as 7 hours and 30 minutes.

Days off include public holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.
RIKEN has introduced telework as a temporary and special measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19. You may be asked to work from home according to the instructions of the institute. You can also choose to work from home with the permission of your supervisor.
No smoking on site (designated smoking areas available).
