Research Field

We work on the development of biologically inspired catalysts as well as the application of biological systems towards energy conversion and material production. Specifically, we aim to understand nature’s ingenuity towards multielectron transfer catalysis, electron/proton transport, metabolic regulation, responsiveness to external stimuli, and energy management in deep sea environments to develop novel materials and systems necessary to effectively manage renewable energy sources.

Research Scientist or Postdoctoral Researcher, a few positions

Job description

Successful candidates will work on one of the following:

  • (1)Development of water electrolysis catalysts using Earth-abundant elements
  • (2)Mechanistic analysis of water electrolysis using operando spectroscopy
  • (3)Hydrogen production using polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolysis

In order to conduct the research above, we are seeking highly competent and experienced researchers with experience in electrochemistry, materials chemistry, catalysis, and/or spectroscopy. There are no requirements on previous research topics. We are looking for members who can conduct research autonomously and independently, as well as stimulate our team

Research Scientist
Carries out research and other work in accordance with group research themes.
Postdoctoral Researcher
Carries out research and other work in accordance with group research themes under the mentorship and training of supervisors.

Qualification

  • The candidate should have sufficient experience to carry out their research autonomously and independently.
  • The candidate must be able to communicate in English.
  • The candidate must be able to communicate and cooperate with collaborators both inside and outside of the research team.
  • *Research Scientist refers to those who have more than 5 years of experience since obtaining their Ph. D. or its equivalent.
  • **Postdoctoral Researcher refers to those with less than 5 years of experience since obtaining their Ph. D., including those who are expected to receive a Ph.D. before the date of employment.

*Job title will be decided based on the applicant's ability and aptitude.

Salary and benefits

The following rules do not apply if the appointment is to begin on or after April 1, 2023, in accordance with the open recruitment procedure by RIKEN after October 17, 2022.

"The employee’s period of fixed-term employment cannot exceed 5/10 years from the initial date of hire (or 5/10 years from April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date)."

  • 1.A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum of the end of the fiscal year (March 31) in which the employee completes 7 years of employment. (Maximum employment duration for a Postdoctoral Researcher is 5 years)
  • 2.RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee’s abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee’s center, laboratory or project and RIKEN’s management situation and budget at the time. In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 65 years.
  • 3.The employee’s period of fixed-term employment cannot exceed 10 years from the initial date of hire (or 10 years from April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date).
  • 4.In principle, the center is set to continue its research to the end of the Mid- to Long-term Plan (7 years from April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2025).
    However, if it is decided that the research project with which the Employee is involved will not be continued, the above provision on continuation of the “research center, laboratory or project” applies and there will be no re-employment for FY 2025 (from April 1, 2025)

In principle, the first two months of employment is considered a trial period.
Salary will be an annual salary based on experience, ability, and performance, and will consist of a base salary and a variable salary. The variable salary will be determined each fiscal year based on experience, ability, and performance. The monthly base salary is 345,600yen for Research Seientist and 290,200 JPY for Postdoctoral Researcher, as of April 1st 2022. The monthly base salary and variable salary are subject to change due to amendments to RIKEN regulations.
In addition to the salary mentioned above, discretionary work, commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will be applied.

The approximate amount of monthly salary at the time of employment:

Research Scientist
The monthly salary including discretionary work allowance at the time of employment for a candidate with 5 years of experience, ability, and achievement after completion of the doctoral course will be approximately 420,000 to 500,000 JPY per month.
Postdoctoral Researcher
The monthly salary including discretionary work allowance at the time of employment for a candidate with 1 year of experience, ability, and achievement after completion of the doctoral course will be approximately 320,000 to 420,000 JPY per month.

Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai).
These positions fall under the specialized duties discretionary work system; one working day will be calculated as 7 hours and 30 minutes.

Days off include public holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.
Paid leave includes annual paid leave (up to 20 days depending on the month of employment), special paid leave (childcare, family nursing care, etc.), and work life balance holidays (up to 7 days depending on the month of employment).
There are also additional leave systems such as maternity leave, childcare leave, and family nursing care leave.
RIKEN has introduced telework as a temporary and special measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19. You may be asked to work from home according to the instructions of the institute. You can also choose to work from home with the permission of your supervisor.
Smoking is not permitted on site except in designated smoking areas. Smoking will be entirely prohibited on site from April 2024.
These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.
