RIKEN and leading Indian institutions launch Joint Research Centers

RIKEN, Japan’s largest research organization launches today two virtual Joint Research Centers with India's premier institution the National Center for Biological Sciences (NCBS), the Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific research (JNCASR) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).

The two centers will facilitate scientific exchange and foster collaborations between Japan and India, in the fields of biology, life science and materials science. They further extend a long history of collaboration between India and Japan, two powerhouses of Asian research and innovation.  The new initiative will encompass new areas of research and establish distinctive areas of cooperation.

RIKEN President, Professor NOYORI Ryoji is in India this week to sign the documents that will formally launch the RIKEN-NCBS Joint Research Center; and the RIKEN-JNCASR-IISc Joint Research Center.

On September 14th, 2013 in Delhi, Prof. Noyori will sign Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) between RIKEN and Dr. Ramasami, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology and Dr. Vijay Raghavan, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. Prof. NOYORI will give a lecture to celebrate the signing.

September 16th 2013 will mark the signing of MoU in Bangalore. The signing ceremony at NCBS is to be presided over by Prof. Mayor, Director, on behalf of NCBS and Prof. NOYORI for RIKEN. The signing ceremony at IISc and JNCASR will be carried out by Prof. Rao from JNCASR, Dr. Balaram from IISc, and Prof. NOYORI from RIKEN.

A series of scientific talks by Prof. Noyori and renowned scientists from RIKEN, and NCBS and inSTEM will mark the commencement of the future collaborations.

The RIKEN-JNCASR-IISc Joint Research Center will support collaboration and facilitate the exchange of research scientists and students working in the fields of materials science and life science research, between the three institutions.

The RIKEN-NCBS Joint Research Center, with the aim to enrich cooperation, will initially focus on supporting the exchange of research staff, postdoctoral researchers and doctoral students working in the areas of biological sciences between RIKEN and NCBS and its allied institutions the Institute of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine (inSTEM) and the Center for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (CCAMP). This development builds on long-standing collaborations between researchers at NCBS and the RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology.
