The SACLA (SPring-8 Angstrom Compact free electron LAser) facility of the RIKEN Harima Institute was awarded the 42nd Japan Industrial Grand Prix (MEXT Prize).

The award was granted in recognition of the world-class quality of the X-ray free electron laser exemplifying the best of Japan's R&D, achieved with a more compact system than those in Europe and the United States, and for on-schedule opening of the facility for shared use. The Prize is shared with nine parties that participated in research and development of the facility.

Note: The Japan Industrial Grand Prix, sponsored by the Nikkan Kogyo Shinbun Ltd. (Business & Technology Daily News), is awarded to industries and groups that develop innovative large-scale industrial facilities and structures or leading-edge technology facilities.
