RIKEN Interdisciplinary Theoretical and Mathematical Sciences Program (iTHEMS)
The natural sciences are subdivided into various fields such as physics, chemistry, and biology. However, if one examines the theoretical structures that stand behind them, using mathematical science, one finds striking resemblances among them.
The goal of the Interdisciplinary Theoretical and Mathematical Sciences Program (iTHEMS) is to function as an international center that brings together researchers in theoretical, mathematical, and computational science, using mathematical methods, to unravel mysteries of the Universe, matter, and life, as well as to solve key problems in modern society. Additionally, by offering interdisciplinary and in-residence schools, workshops featuring leading-edge researchers in fundamental science, and industry-academia partnership lectures to learn about how mathematics is being used by companies and society, as well as daily interactions among theoretical, mathematical and computational scientists, iTHEMS aims to develop an ideal environment for young researchers to make major breakthroughs.
Further, through collaborations with universities and research institutes in Japan and overseas, the program aims to develop an international network for brain circulation.
