On September 12, 2013, RIKEN and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) held a joint workshop in Shanghai on the fields of computer simulation, laser science and neutron science. The workshop was organized to provide students and researchers interested in these fields an opportunity to meet and exchange views, and to lay the seeds for new research collaborations.

SJTU President Zhang Jie, in an open discussion held the same day, agreed to further support such collaboration by establishing a joint research center and a collaboration framework which would include support for young researchers.

RIKEN and SJTU will be continuing their collaboration with another workshop in October on the environment and energy. From FY 2014, the research on laser science in this series of collaborative events will be supported by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology under the terms of an MOU between RIKEN and the Ministry.

RIKEN and SJTU have been collaborating since 2008 when the two institutions first entered into a general agreement for cooperation. RIKEN is also seeking to expand its joint research activities in the Shanghai region through additional collaborations with research institutes including the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics. These workshops promise to stimulate additional joint research and strengthen the foundations for future collaborations.

Following the workshop, Professor Shoji Nagamiya, Science Advisor to RIKEN, gave a talk on accelerator science in Japan to a crowded room of students with a keen interest in this area of research.
