RIKEN-Max Planck Joint Research Center for Systems Chemical Biology holds Third Joint Symposium

The third joint symposium of the RIKEN-Max Planck Joint Research Center for Systems Chemical Biology was held May 21–24, 2014, at the Max Planck Society’s Ringberg Castle, south of Munich, Germany.
The joint research center aims to become a leading world institution in the area of systems chemical biology through collaborative research in the field promoted by Director Herbert Waldmann of the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology, Director Peter Seeberger of the Max Planck Institute for Colloids and Interfaces, and Joint Research Center Director Hiroyuki Osada and Group Director Naoyuki Taniguchi of the RIKEN Global Research Cluster.
The symposium opened on the morning of May 22 with words of welcome from Mr. Hidenao Yanagi, Consul-General of the Japan Consulate General in Munich. This was followed by opening speeches by Dr. Ludwig Kronthaler, Secretary General of the Max Planck Society, and Dr. Kohei Tamao, Director of the RIKEN Global Cluster. The speakers touched upon the history of collaboration between Japan and Germany, and between RIKEN and the Max Planck Society over the past three decades, and expressed high hopes for new collaborative achievements. After the speeches, around 20 researchers each from RIKEN and Max Planck presented their research achievements and entered into lively discussions.
It is expected that this symposium will lead to even further advances in chemical biology research at both RIKEN and Max Planck.
