Outline of Laboratory
Our lab investigates how lipids regulate plant growth and development. We also use our basic understanding to engineer lipid metabolism for sustainable oil products in plants.

Job description
Mainly involved in the research project GteX on the elucidation of molecular mechanism and metabolic engineering of the plant lipid metabolism and accumulation.
The project is expected to end on 31 March 2028.
In addition, the successful candidate may be expected to contribute to other research projects led by our team, as required by the progress and needs of related initiatives.
Labware washing, autoclaving, preparation of soil and culture media, garbage disposing, plant watering, preparation of chemical reagents, and other task related to the management of lab work. We may ask for the assistance of routine lab experimental tasks such as sample preparation of lipidomic analysis and screening of transgenic plants depending on the ability and experience of the candidate.
The job description may be changed during the contract period or upon contract renewal to the extent described above.
Qualification
Education
Bachelor, Master or PhD degree, or equivalent intellectual and technical background relevant to the subject indicated below.
Requirement
- A candidate who is motivated, cooperative, and interested in the scientific contents of the research program.
- Previous experience in working in a laboratory on biological sciences is required.
- Proficiency in English and very basic spoken Japanese to communicate with the other part-timer will be a plus.
Non-Japanese must currently live in Japan (or plan to live for purposes other than this employment).

RIKEN Yokohama Campus (1-7-22 Suehiro-cho, Tsurumi-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa 230-0045, Japan)
Work location will not be changed during the term of this employment contract or upon renewal.
Salary and benefits
Hourly wages
1,250 - 2,100 JPY
Hourly salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Commuting allowance provided (within a pre-determined range.)
Terms of contract
A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable up to maximum to March 31, 2028 (mentioned on [Job title and Job description]) from the date of hire.
RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee’s abilities,
work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee’s center, laboratory or project and RIKEN’s management situation and budget at the time
Working days / hours
3-5 days per week (weekdays only),
The work hours shall be one of the following, with the total time not to exceed 35 hours/week.
- 1.9 am–5:20 pm (four times or less per week)
- 2.Set hours between 9 am and 5:20 pm, in one-hour units.
(Working days and hours are negotiable. However, daily working hours cannot be shifted for different days.)
Those with a "Student" status of residence or similar restrictions on work must fulfill all the following conditions.:
- 1.Can verify having Permission to Engage in Activity other than that Permitted under the Status of Residence Previously Granted
- 2.Does not have a concurrent position outside of RIKEN
- 3.Works no more than 28 hours per week

Holidays
Saturdays and Sundays, Japanese national holidays, New Year holidays (Dec.29-Jan.3), and RIKEN Foundation Day (4th Monday in October).
Other provisions
- Worker’s accident compensation insurance applies. Social insurance will be applied depending on the working conditions.
- Paid leave includes annual paid leave (up to 20 days depending on the number of days and hours worked per week and the month of employment), special paid leave (childcare, family nursing care, etc.), and work life balance holidays (up to 7 days depending on the month of employment).
- There are also additional leave systems such as maternity leave, childcare leave, and family nursing care leave.
- Smoking is entirely prohibited on site.
- These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.
