Outline of Laboratory

The Laboratory for Advanced Biomolecular Engineering is recruiting technical employees to carry out our research theme. The research overview of the laboratory is shown below.

In our laboratory/team, we aim to engineer functional bio-macromolecules applicable to medical and basic biological researches, by integrating technologies in synthetic and structural biology including in vitro reconstruction of target protein complexes, in vitro evolution of protein/RNA, X-ray crystallography, and structure based protein engineering.
We are also trying to experimentally reconstruct evolutionary pathway from primordial peptides to elaborate proteins.

Job description

The successful candidate will contribute to research on protein structure and function by expressing, purifying, and characterizing target proteins. For proteins involved in specialized peptide synthesis systems, the candidate will utilize both cell-free translation and recombinant expression systems, followed by biochemical and biophysical analyses of the purified proteins.
Additionally, the candidate will be responsible for the expression, purification, and structural analysis of proteins that are challenging to predict computationally, such as atypical or novel protein folds.

The job description may be changed during the contract period or upon contract renewal to the extent described above.

The difference in positions is as follows:
Technical Staff II: Provide technical support for laboratory research themes.

Qualification

  • A person who is able to dedicate themselves to the job by communicating, coordinating and collaborating smoothly with people in and out of the laboratory.
  • Graduate of a professional college, junior college, university (or higher) with specialized knowledge and skills in a field related to molecular biology and biochemistry, or equivalent abilities and at least 2 years of experience in a related field.

RIKEN may order the employee to change work locations, if necessary.

Salary and benefits

  • 1.A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, up to March 31, 2028.
  • 2.RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee’s abilities, workload at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee’s center, laboratory or project and RIKEN’s management situation and budget at the time. In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 70 years.

In principle, the first two months of employment are considered a trial period.

Salary will be an annual salary based on experience, ability, and performance, and will consist of a base salary and a variable salary. The variable salary will be determined each fiscal year based on experience, ability, and performance. The monthly base salary and variable salary are subject to change due to amendments to RIKEN regulations. Commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will be applied.
The approximate amount of monthly salary at the time of employment:

The monthly salary at the time of employment will be more than 260,000 JPY.
For a candidate who joins RIKEN immediately after finishing their undergraduate degree, the monthly pay at hire will be 260,000 JPY.

RIKEN has a telecommuting system, but this position requires attendance at the work location. Therefore, the telecommuting system is not available for this position, in principle. For more information, please get in touch with the hiring staff at mncfd-recruit@riken.jp.

Work hours: 9:00 to 17:20 (lunch break 12:00 to 12:50). Supervisors may instruct employees to work outside of these hours. Days off include public holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.
Paid leave includes annual paid leave (up to 20 days depending on the month of employment), special paid leave (caring for a sick child, family nursing care, etc.), and work life balance holidays (up to 7 days depending on the month of employment).
There are also additional leave systems such as maternity leave, childcare leave, and family nursing care leave.
Smoking is entirely prohibited on site.
These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.

Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai).
