R-IH Summer Program Internship 2025 (Wako Campus)

Data Knowledge Organization Unit, Advanced Networking Technology Unit & Fundamental Physics Data Sharing Unit, RIKEN offers an internship program targeting undergraduate/graduate students for summer 2025.
The Summer Program at RIKEN Information R&D and Strategy Headquarters(R-IH) is designed to encourage young researchers to pursue future research and development in the field of information science, and provides opportunities for domestic and foreign university and graduate school students to conduct research and development activities in the laboratories of the R-IH under the supervision of a laboratory leader.

Internship date and time
  • Long Stay Program (Type A):July 24 (Thu) - Sep. 19 (Fri), 2025
  • Short Stay Program(Type B):Aug.21 (Thu) - Sep.19 (Fri), 2025
  • Interns must work on every RIKEN workday during internship period. Daily working hours:9:00-17:20 (Break: 12:00-12:50)
  • Both Type A&B students will be requested to present your achievement on Sep.12 (Fri).

Eligibility

Common matters

Undergraduate/Graduate Students (both in Japan and overseas) can apply on the condition that they meet all the requirements below.

  • Applicants must belong to universities whose head or the delegated person can issue a formal letter of request and agreement on behalf of applicants.
  • Eligible applicants must be enrolled in an academic institute at the time of application throughout the program period.

Acceptance in Data Knowledge Organization Unit

Please select either “A1. Full-scale Research Type”, which promotes information research for two months, or “A2. Basic Research Type”, in which basic informatics and knowledge are collected during the first month and applied research is promoted during the second month.

  • A1.The Full Research Type accepts research proposals in the field of information needed to promote data science and open science. If you wish to apply for A1. full-scale research type, please submit proposals for the following 1) to 3).
    • 1)Challenge to new research and development, including the development of the information environment and technology necessary to utilize data from their own field by students conducting research in physics, biology, and other research fields.
    • 2)Research on the development of fundamental technologies required for data generation, systematization, integration, sharing, and publication in order to promote the utilization of data.
    • 3)Research on the development of new functions utilizing AI, etc., especially for data retrieval.
  • A2.Basic Research Type is intended for those who have acquired the necessary basic knowledge of informatics and wish to conduct the research and development described in 1) to 3) above. Please propose the research you wish to conduct.

Acceptance in Advanced Networking Technology Unit

Students in the fields of science and engineering research, including informatics, who wish to research and learn fundamental technologies related to networks that contribute to the promotion of basic science are eligible for this program.

Acceptance in Fundamental Physics Data Sharing Unit

Students in the research fields of physics or engineering (electrical and electronic, communication, information, etc.) who wish to study and learn information-related technologies necessary to promote physics research, such as large-scale computation, data analysis, numerical simulation, data collection, data compression, and machine learning.

Application screening and interviews After the application deadline, document screening and interviews (web-based) will be conducted.
Both Type A and Type B applicants will be notified of the results of the selection process in early April.

      If you wish to apply for Data Knowledge Organization Unit, also indicate which of the following you prefer.
      • A1.Full-scale research type (2 months to promote informatics research)
      • A2.Basic research type (The first month is dedicated to collecting basic informatics knowledge, and the second month to promoting applied research)
    Details such as the content of the guidance shall be decided after consultation with the applicant.

Note on the use of personal information:
The submitted documents are strictly controlled based on RIKEN Personal Information Protection Regulations and used only for the purpose of screening. Any private information in applications is not disclosed to third parties, either intentionally or through negligence. Application documents will not be returned.
Expenses covered The expenses below will be covered in accordance with RIKEN travel policy.
  • Round-trip transportation between the host laboratory and the university or graduate school to which the student belongs (limited to once if the student is coming from a distant location that requires overnight stay).
  • Stay expenses:2,400 yen/day for daily allowance and 11,600 yen/day for accommodation (if accommodation is required, it will be paid even on holidays).
  • *If you use RIKEN's on-campus housing, you will be reimbursed for the actual cost of lodging as the Accommodation fee.

Note

  • 1.All students excluding RIKEN's on-campus housing users will receive JPY408,400 for the first month (calculated based on 29nights 30 days full coverage) and for the 2nd month, Type A students will receive 90% of the full amount (JPY367,560) in accordance with RIKEN travel policy.
  • 2.The reimbursement will be carried out at the timing of after the first month (for Type A&B) and one more time after the second month for Type A. For overseas bank the reimbursement process may take certain time. Please be ready to temporarily support your daily expenses until the reimbursement will be carried out.
  • 3.Those who belong to universities within 50 kilometers in distance from RIKEN will receive commuting expenses only.
  • 4.Accommodation will be basically booked by the students and the transportation fee between the accommodation and the RIKEN office must be covered from the daily allowances RIKEN will reimburse.
  • 5.Reimbursement will be made after the required documents are submitted. If you fail to abide by RIKEN travel policy, the full amount may not be reimbursed.
  • 6.For overseas air tickets, please do not arrange it yourself until the secretariat will contact you for instructions.
